Because the punishment is so severe in your own penalty area you need to defend more safely/accurately, it affects how you play! It always has! Sports are full of these micro games within a game!

I don't necessarily disagree with the overarching discussion on this, but players know that within their own penalty area, if they fuck up, they are giving away a PK. There is 0 surprise to the punishment, so you govern yourself accordingly. Game is somewhat built around this.

The thing is, GRRM never expected that literally everyone would figure out and take for granted that R+L=J so it was absolutely planned to be a big reveal in the books.

I have been watching American football all my life. I did not ever play an organized version of it. I watch videos on different schemes and stuff for fun. I can honestly say that when I watch a game, I am understanding it in only a very surface level, never truly grasping it

The idea that soccer is more complex than football is just comically inaccurate. In football, you see teams with inferior talent regularly win games because they have better schemes and smarter playcallers. That almost never happens in soccer, and when it does the scheme is almost always "park the bus and hope to steal a set-piece goal or win on penalties."
