Really nuanced discussion on First Take between SAS, Domonique Foxworth and Shannon Sharpe about Tyreek Hill’s detainment video. There are some parallels between how this issue is discussed and how we discuss women and sexual assault. The burden of de-escalation and safety is placed squarely on the people who are victimized. We’re teaching Black boys and men how to not be brutalized or have their life taken by the police, when we’ve seen so many cases of Black folks complying and still being subjected to cruelty (see: Philando Castile, Sonya Massey).

The unavoidable reality is that if a police officer decides to be a problem, there is very little that can be done. Same as with sexual assault. There is no perfect playbook a woman or girl can follow so as not to be assaulted. Yes, there are precautions, but so much of the conversation is focused on teaching girls and women how not to be raped/assaulted as opposed to shifting the conversation so as to not enable predators.

The burden of responsibility will only change with increased accountability on the people who commit these offenses.
