"Poetry is an act of communication only complete upon reception." I can't remember who wrote that, but it taught me to believe in my reader, to imagine my reader, in revision practice being your reader, that stranger out there who needs your work.
Fiction is not a luxury for privileged people. Fiction is for the homeless reading it at the public library, the prisoners reading it in jail, the sick reading it alone in a hospital.
When life becomes too much, a little escapism becomes a necessity.
Be a Kermit the Frog. Have a creative vision and no ego. Recognize the unique talents of those around you. Attract weirdos. Manage chaos. Show kindness. Be sincere.
