South Africa now counts 63 522 380 people. The number that matters more is our fertility rate of 2,12. Demographers treat 2,1 as the replacement level, the point at which one generation exactly replaces the last. South Africa’s child mortality is still higher than in a rich country, so our true replacement threshold sits a little above 2,1. We may already be under it.

The population is still growing. But the reason has changed. South Africans are living longer, not having more children. Infant mortality has fallen from 59,9 per thousand to 23,7. Life expectancy has reached 68,3 years, the highest Stats SA has recorded. But births peaked in 2008 and have been falling since.

Premium carmaker BMW is to offer almost half its German staff voluntary redundancy in a bid to cut 8,000 jobs by the end of 2027, a company source told AFP. About 40,000 of BMW's roughly 85,000 permanent German employees would receive the offers from October, the source said, adding that production line workers would be spared the cuts.

BREAKING NEWS | SAPS National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe has confirmed the arrest of 45-year-old UK fugitive Mkhanyisi Tshuma by the SAPS Organised Crime Unit and Interpol in Kensington, Johannesburg. Tshuma allegedly fled the United Kingdom after the deaths of his wife and two children. Mathe says, “South Africa is not a hiding place for fugitives.”
