Theme: Beware of the Consequence of What You Bring Before Allah
“Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it, and they will be safe from the terror of that Day. And whoever comes with an evil deed, their faces will be overturned into the Fire. Will you be rewarded except for what you used to do?”
LESSONS:
1. What we do today is what we carry into the Hereafter
The Qurʾān speaks of people coming with their deeds. Our actions are not simply forgotten moments; they become part of what we present before Allah. Every word, kindness, injustice, act of worship and transgression matters.
2. Allah's reward is greater than the good deed itself
Allah says that whoever comes with al-ḥasanah will have khayrun minhā, something better than it. A small act of sincere goodness may therefore receive a reward far beyond what the servant could have imagined.
3. Safety on the most terrifying Day is a divine gift
The Day of Resurrection will be a day of tremendous fear, yet Allah promises security to those who come with good. The greatest success is not merely worldly comfort; it is to be among those whom Allah protects when others are overwhelmed by fear.
4. Evil has consequences
The second verse presents the opposite reality. Those who come with evil deeds face the consequences of what they deliberately brought forth. The Qurʾān therefore challenges the illusion that actions have no ultimate consequences.
5. The question should transform how we live
هَلۡ تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
“Will you be rewarded except for what you used to do?”
It is a profound reminder of personal responsibility. Before judging what others will receive, we should ask ourselves: What am I preparing to bring before Allah?
May Allah make us people who come to Him with īmān, sincere worship, good character and abundant ḥasanāt. May He protect us from the terror of the Day of Resurrection, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us security when humanity stands before Him. Āmīn.
