VAR isn't ruining soccer. It's just now enforcing the rules that have always been down to the literal toe nail. It's much better than before, when teams were knocked out on a goal that was actually offsides.

The ref whistles is what ends the game, not a shot clock. 10 min of stoppage was estimated. A goal was scored during the stoppage chewing up 1-3 min in celebrations.

One example for those who are in the former group. If there were no offside every team would be incentivized to have on player stand on the outside of the box or as close to the goal as possible. Offside is likely the most important rule in soccer.
