There was no earthquake in Nepal on Wednesday.

USGS went back through the seismic data. The "magnitude 4.4 quake" was a mountain coming down. A chunk of glacier and rock broke off Langtang Lirung at 17,000 feet, fell nearly 4,000 feet, and every seismometer in the region read it as a 5.2.

This is the before and after from space. Landsat flew over two hours later. That brown streak is the start of a path that ran about 62 miles downstream.

616 dead as of Saturday morning. Roughly 2,500 still missing, including 90 Americans.

So my post Wednesday had it backwards. No quake, it started on the Nepal side, and it is 90 Americans missing, not 3. Correcting that here.

Illinois has already shattered its tornado record this year and is now legitimately chasing the all-time U.S. record for any state.

Texas holds that record with 244 tornadoes in 2015.

And somehow... it’s still only August.

Level 2 risk today covers Nebraska, Illinois, and the Carolinas, about 24 million people. Nebraska's storms could bow out into damaging wind or fire up into individual storms dropping hail over 2 inches, forecasters aren't sure which yet. Chicago's best wind window runs 3-9 PM, peaking near 6, while Charlotte and Columbia see similar wind risk starting as early as 2 this afternoon.
