Days after the polls closed, California was still counting — and Steve Hilton, the Republican fighting for a spot in November’s governor’s race, put the dysfunction in terms anyone can grasp. “𝘐𝘵’𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴, 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘦.”

He laid out why it drags. One bucket is late mail: California counts ballots that arrive 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲, as long as they were postmarked in time. The numbers back the chaos. An estimated 𝟑.𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 remained uncounted days after the vote, leaving the second general-election slot genuinely up in the air — Hilton chasing it against billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer while the glacial count dragged on for the better part of a week.

His indictment ran broader than one election. “𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. Outside the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark, the movement that never stops lecturing the rest of us about racism dropped the mask on camera. A crowd of anti-ICE agitators singled out a 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 and unloaded on him — not for anything he said, but for the color of his skin and the badge on his chest.

They called him an 𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘮. They called him a 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥. They told him to 𝘨𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘨𝘦 and sneered that he and his colleagues were nothing but 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘛𝘚𝘈. One agitator got in his face daring him to make contact — the textbook move of trying to 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫 on video.

Sit with the picture for a second. A Black man does his job enforcing federal law, and a self-styled anti-racist mob decides the worst insult they can hurl is that he is a race traitor. The same people who insist America is irredeemably bigoted reached straight for the ugliest racial script they could find the moment a Black man stood on the wrong side of their politics.

Mixed into the screaming was the now-standard slander — chants of 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱∗𝘥𝘰 and 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 aimed at men whose actual job is removing criminal illegal aliens from American streets. Slogans, not arguments, because the slogans are all that is left.

This is the tell. When the cameras roll and the talking points run out, the loudest voices on the left do not reveal hidden compassion. They reveal contempt — for the law, for the men who enforce it, and especially for the minorities who refuse to stay on their assigned plantation.

For decades the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list put the faces of violent fugitives on the nation’s wall. This week, Director Kash Patel did the same thing to the people who rob you with a keyboard instead of a gun, unveiling the bureau’s 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 — an idea he credited to Vice President JD Vance.

The opening roster is eight fugitives accused of stealing 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 $𝟏.𝟑 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝, with individual schemes running from $1.3 million all the way to a staggering $1.2 billion. These aren’t small-time grifters; they are the architects of the scams that drain taxpayers, gut consumer investments, and loot the public programs working families depend on.

It didn’t arrive alone. Patel rolled the list out alongside fresh DOJ charges against fourteen people in Ohio tied to a $𝟑𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 that targeted funds meant for children, plus a wave of COVID-relief and romance-scam cases. The message to the fugitives is simple: your name and face are now public, and the tip line is 1-800-CALL-FBI.

And here is the part that should unite everyone. As one observer put it, “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘹 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘋 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘙” — it was stolen from all of us. A Bureau that spent recent years chasing parents and political opponents is now publicly hunting the billion-dollar thieves instead.

Jeff Metcalf, father of Austin and his identical twin Hunter, spoke publicly after Karmelo Anthony was convicted of stabbing Austin to death at a Frisco, Texas track meet in April 2025.
