Announcing the 28th Wole Soyinka Lecture The 28th Wole Soyinka Lecture Series, featuring the NAS Martyr’s Day, reflects on Nigeria’s long struggle for democracy and the civic sacrifices that shaped its political evolution. This year’s theme – “Reclaiming the Nigerian State through Accountability, Justice and Civic Courage” – addresses the urgent need to confront decades of impunity, weakened institutions, insecurity, and eroded public trust in governance. The lecture revisits the legacy of Nigeria’s “democracy martyrs,”including the dark era of military repression in Port Harcourt, and reaffirms the responsibility of citizens and leaders to uphold accountability, justice, and civic courage. With contributions from distinguished speakers, democracy advocates, and thought leaders, the 28th WSLS serves as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and collective action – strengthening civic oversight beyond the ballot box and advancing Nigeria’s democratic renewal. This year’s lecture features contributions from distinguished voices including Chief Osita Chidoka, OFR, Prof Obari Gomba, Gbene Joi Nunieh, Esq., Hilda Dokubo, and Rt. Hon. Uche Onyeagwucha, Lady Stella Fubara, and Demola Sam-Adeoye. This year’s edition will be enriched by the presence of eminent personalities, including, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, and Professor Wole Soyinka, GCON (Nobel Laureate).

Zanas Deck (Lagos Mainland) of the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) recently carried out an environmental advocacy project aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier community. The initiative which held at Oyadiran Estate in the Makoko area of Lagos, provided an opportunity for members of the association to engage residents on the importance of maintaining a clean environment and adopting proper waste disposal practices. In addition to the community sensitization exercise, members of the association distributed cleaning materials to residents to support and encourage effective waste management, including the proper collection and bagging of refuse. #ForHumanisticIdeals #NASPC1952

N50m was reportedly spent on the Construction of The Magistrate Court and High Court at Erho, Abraka, Delta state in the 2024 Delta state Budget Implementation Report. We visited this facility and saw that nothing was done. No new construction or renovation of the existing facility. We met with the court officials from both courts and they asserted that they have not heard of the project and nothing of such was done. The magistrate also told us that the current benches at the court were provided by the community. The roofs of some parts of the court are pulling off and the entire compound has been overgrown by bushes. We call on the office of Gov @RtHonSheriff, @officialEFCC, and the @icpcnigeria to look into this discrepancy and provide the public with details of this project.
