π¨ Roy Keane on Belgium being awarded a penalty after Youri Tielemans went down in the second half of extra time:
π£οΈ βThat's a disgrace. Absolutely shocking officiating. I honestly don't know what the referee has seen there to give a penalty.β
βTielemans hadn't even won the ball. There was the slightest bit of contact, but that's football. If we're giving penalties for incidents like that, defenders may as well stop tackling altogether.β
βThese are the moments that ruin big matches. You've got two teams battling for over 120 minutes, and then the game is potentially decided by one incredibly soft decision. It's not good enough at this level. The referee has got that completely wrong, and I don't think VAR has covered itself in glory either.β
π¨ Pep Guardiola on Belgiumβs late penalty:
π£οΈ Reporter:
βWhat did you make of the penalty?β
π£οΈ Pep Guardiola:
βI always say football should be decided by football. Senegal had defended with incredible discipline for almost the entire match. To see such a soft contact become the defining moment is very difficult for everyone to understand.β
βIf the contact is not absolutely clear, I donβt think you decide a World Cup knockout match with a penalty in the final moments. Let the players decide it themselves.β
βSenegal earned the right to keep fighting. Belgium earned the right to keep attacking. In games like this, I prefer the result to come from the quality of the football, not from one controversial decision.β
βWhen two teams have sacrificed so much, one whistle should never become bigger than everything that happened over ninety minutes.β
βOf course the referee has to make decisions, and I respect that. But these are the moments that leave people talking about officiating instead of the football. Nobody wants that.β
βIf you cannot say with complete certainty that it is a penalty, then donβt give it. At this level, every decision carries enormous consequences.
"For me, a penalty should be clear. It should be obvious. It should not be one of those decisions where you need ten replays, three camera angles and five minutes of debate to convince people."
setuju dengan zlatan.
π¨π£οΈ Zlatan IbrahimoviΔ on the penalty given to Belgium against Senegal:
βTo be honest with you, I donβt believe that was a penalty for Belgium.
From my point of view, Senegal were robbed. The contact was minimal, the Belgian player made the most of it, and the referee bought it completely.
This is the problem with modern football. Attackers now understand that once they feel a little touch in the box, they go down and wait for VAR to reward them.
For me, a penalty should be clear. It should be obvious. It should not be one of those decisions where you need ten replays, three camera angles and five minutes of debate to convince people.
Senegal fought hard. They matched Belgium physically, tactically and mentally. So to see such a big knockout game swing because of a soft penalty is painful.
If that is a penalty, then defenders might as well stop defending in the box.
Football is becoming too soft.β
π¨New: Sadio Mane on the controversial penalty appeal for Youri Tielemans against Senegal:
π£οΈβThis is football, not theatre. Tielemans gets to the ball first, Camara is doing exactly what every defender is taught from the first day, clear the danger. They arrive almost together, thereβs only minimal, unavoidable contact after the challenge. That alone is not a foul.
The Laws of the Game donβt punish every collision. A penalty requires a careless, reckless, or excessive-force foul. Simply making contact after both players challenge for the ball isnβt enough. Football is a contact sport, not a non-contact exhibition.
VAR is supposed to correct clear and obvious errors, not turn every 50-50 duel into a courtroom trial. Every time the referee is dragged to the monitor for incidents like this, the game loses another piece of its soul. Itβs like using a microscope to find an elephant, it makes no sense.
Senegal were fighting like lions, Belgium were hanging by a thread, and then one decision threatens to rewrite the entire story. If this is a penalty today, then defenders may as well stop tackling and start writing apology letters before kick-off.
Modern football is becoming a house built on sand, one soft decision after another. The badge on the refereeβs shirt is starting to carry more influence than the players wearing the jerseys. Thatβs not protecting the game; thatβs suffocating itβ
