So, according to the Guardian, the Olympic folks are apologizing and acknowledging the scene was meant to invoke the Last Supper. Glad they apologized. Glad it’s cleared up.

One lingering thought — so much of the pushback against outrage was against the “narcissism” of Evangelicals with a persecution complex. After all, they’re big and powerful and they voted for Trump and are the source of all manner of oppression.

Anyone who follows me (I hope) knows my unbroken record of “Never” on the Trump thing, and I’m no stranger to confronting evangelical hypocrisy and corruption.

But…

This reading of things strikes me as myopic in a whole other direction. After all — thank God — the Church is much larger and more diverse and complex than North American Megachurch MAGA evangelicalism. And this event had a global audience — Evangelicals weren’t the only ones offended. (The loudest outcry seems to be from global Catholics.)

Meanwhile…

More than 60,000 Nigerian Christians have been massacred by Islamists since 2000.

Open Doors estimates that 13 Christians a day are murdered for their faith.

According to Voice of the Martyrs, 750,000 Christians have been driven out of Syria due to the Civil War there, and that’s after untold thousands were slaughtered in years prior by the Islamic State.

And of course, one could go on (and on and on).

Point being: when you say “the Church should be more circumspect about what they’ve done to invite such mockery and ridicule,” I want to ask “Okay, but which church? Do Nigerian and Syrian Christians deserve to have their sacred symbols ridiculed? Because while I’m sure they’d agree it ain’t persecution to have a bearded lady playing Jesus at the Last Supper and to have Dionysus take the place of the Lamb on the table, they’d also probably find it grotesque and offensive.”

Maybe the better thing is to say, “Hey let’s be really respectful and judicious with religious symbols, regardless of which religion or what perceived power they have and don’t have.”

@Apple why’s this iPhone 15 so slow. Been loyal for over 20 years but this might be the first time I’ve felt disappointed. What’s the fix???? Looks like online there’s lots of us.
