#MPCI26 Increased Premium Subsidy: Subsidies are going up 5% on optional unit levels up to 75% level and increase 3% on 80% and 85% levels. This additional savings will make 75% optional units look even better and 80% for beginning farmers.
Thoughts on #ECO#Enhancedcoverageoption#Crop25@doranpost for irrigated producers with hail risk buying optional unit coverage. Sales closing date is March 15.
Pros and cons below:
Cons:
1) It's not a substitute for physical insurance on your farm. You still need MPCI at reasonable level, plus Hail and wind coverage. 240 bushel corn x $4.50 = $1080 per acre of coverage.
2) It's area coverage, small county yield changes may affect payment opportunities. I say small because we're discussing irrigated growers.
3) Again, it's area coverage, you get hailed out, it won't pay because you or your neighbors get hailed out.
4) It doesn't pay until June of the following year, June 2026 is a long time if corn is under $4.04.
Pros:
1) 65% subsidy for 95% area coverage. This is HUGE!
Compare that to #MultiPeril subsidy's only 59% on 70, 55% on 75, 48% on 80 and 38% on 85. Moving up to 85% costs you more money than purchasing 95% #ECO.
2) Most growers choose Revenue coverage over Yield coverage because of price declines (although I'd argue, price increases are a larger risk). However, the decline in price must be severe to trigger payment on price alone.
3) If it's difficult for you to execute a marketing plan or floor with low commodity prices or you never have this type of discussion. You can buy insurance, write a premium check and have a floor in place.
4) Hindsight: Spring price was $4.70. March 6, December corn is $4.45, ECO won't factor until October looking at December corn.
#USDA#HarvestPrice for #corn24 has been set at $4.16 down from $4.66. Irrigated producers with a 240 APH at 75% coverage will see an increase in bushel guarantee from 180 bushel to 201. Dryland producers with an APH of 160 will see a bushel guarantee increase from 120 to 134.

"3 of 3" June fat cattle $180 PUT is asking $5.775 or $2310 for 40,000 lbs. $5.775 x 12.50 = $72.18 per head. Always interesting how close these correlate.

Standing grain fire insurance is around 25 cents a hundred, very cheap. Your MPCI doesn't typically cover man made fires like combine fires. Call for more information. #grainfire#combinefire
