🎙️On @bbc5live for Polanski’s speech and think it might be worth flagging this again …
Polanski in 2016: ‘I would be passionate about them [rent caps and rent control] too if they were proven to work.’

Today we are incredibly grateful for the courage and quick action by pilot Cpt. Smit Machchhar who was stabbed by his copilot on FZ1073, yet still managed to open the cockpit door and call for help before collapsing. His heroism in the moment of crisis saved over 170 lives today.
Israelis are all wishing him a full recovery and are thankful for his leadership. 🙏🏽 🇮🇱 🤝 🇮🇳
📍 El problema no es defender a los palestinos. El problema es olvidar a los israelíes.
Vi completo el discurso de Benjamin Netanyahu ante la ONU. Mientras decenas de delegados abandonaban la sala, Netanyahu siguió hablando. No pidió permiso. No bajó la voz. No negoció la existencia de Israel.
Y tenia razones.
Desde el 7 de octubre de 2023, el mundo parece haber aprendido una curiosa manera de contar esta guerra. Hamas asesinó a unas 1.200 personas y secuestró a 251.
"Israel will continue to defend its democracy, its citizens and its right to participate fully in international sport. It will continue to reject unequivocally the allegation that it is committing genocide. And it will continue to believe that football should build bridges, not walls, just as it does every day within Israeli society."
Here’s what the media doesn’t tell you about the caricature of Israel you have in your mind.
In less than two hours, over 7 million Jewish Israelis will mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Some will go to synagogue. Some will go to the beach. Nobody will drive unless they have to. Many will not eat or drink for 25 hours, religious or not.
Then you have over 2 million Arab Israelis who will go on with their lives as usual. Many will not drive in mixed cities out of respect for their Jewish neighbors. Nobody will drive in Jewish neighborhoods. And the hospitals will only be filled with Arab doctors and nurses to let their Jewish colleagues observe the day at home. (The opposite happens on Ramadan.)
Not long ago I went out to run a few last-minute errands before the holiday begins. Every Arab I interacted with – at the dry cleaners, in the supermarket, in the elevator – wished me an easy fast.
Every one.
It happens every holiday. Any holiday. Their holidays and ours.
This is the real Israel. A country filled with Jews and Arabs that get along better than anywhere else on this planet, that nobody shows you because it’s simply not newsworthy.
It’s everyday life.
To all those who observe – have an easy fast.

Jeremy Corbyn MP weighed in on a sparsely-attended Parliamentary debate to mark 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street, at which in 1936 Jews and their allies stood up to the British Union of Fascists and stopped their hate march.
Mr Corbyn – the man under whose leadership the Labour Party was found by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to have illegally discriminated against Jews – had thoughts to share.
He praised the fact that at Cable Street, ordinary people (he doesn’t mention that they were Jews) stood up to the fascists.
He recounted how “all of officialdom said to the people of the East End: ‘shut up, do nothing about it and let them march.”
But Mr Corbyn seems not to realise that today, the same officialdom – including politicians like him – tells the descendants of those Jews at Cable Street to shut up and let the Palestine hate marches march.
The story is the same, and so are the Jewish victims. The difference is that Mr Corbyn speaks at the hate marches, rather than opposing them. For shame.
Bill Clinton: “The Palestinians were offered a state. They refused. A state wasn't their goal. Killing Jews was."
This must be shared every single day.
September 5, 1972.
11 members of Israel’s Olympic delegation went to Munich to represent their country. They never came home.
They were murdered by Black September, a Palestinian terrorist organization linked to the PLO.
54 years later, we remember them - and remain unwavering in our fight against terrorism. 🕯️🇮🇱
Never forget the elation, the orgasmic celebration of the innocent civilians of Gaza on 10/7.
This was their World Series. The day their children graduated college. The best day of their lives.
Crying tears of joy in the streets as dead Jews were proudly carried through Gaza in beautiful, broad daylight.

First wrote for @ConHome in February that this move was under discussion re a shadow cabinet reshuffle
Fellow MPs even then were very keen that Tugendhat come into the fold ⬇️

'You have no right! No right!’ Goose 38 squawked at us – her crew as noisy as her name suggested, red protest flag stuffed in hand – furious we might steal her wind as our racing boat crept towards the shore to dodge a bad tide.
‘What are you talking about? Nonsense!’ our helmsman shouted back, deciding to take the risk – rocks and sandbanks lurking below be damned.

It was the day after The Spectator's summer party and I was on my way to something called a death café. After an unknown quantity of Pol Roger the night before, I was already contemplating my own mortality.
This death café was being held in a Gail's in Horsham (after closing time, mercifully for its customers). The coffee tables were shoved awkwardly together in the middle of the shop floor.
Eight of us, all women, sat: a healthcare worker, a retiree, a lawyer, two death doulas (we'll get to them later) and me, at 26, three decades younger than anyone else present.

@BBCWorld The world would be a safer place with more countries like Israel that are willing and able to defend themselves against terrorist organisations. I’ve been to both Israel and Gaza. If you haven’t, maybe spend less time repeating slogans and more time learning about the realities
