Sometimes we get it, sometimes we don’t. Someones they inspire and sometimes they infuriate. Regardless, it’s always an intellectual treat.
Certain formulations suggest that some in the Rabbinic universe believed that tuma is a contagion. It would therefore not be so crazy to suspect that, according to them, matter with more “vulnerable” characteristics would more easily become “infected.”
I am looking for something more than the obvious and the superficial. Of course tuma and tahara is allegory for him, but the level of engagement on Rambam’s part suggests a much deeper affinity than that.
As far as I can tell this is another one of scholarship’s blindspots. Academia has not gotten around yet to help make sense of the way Rambam reconciles these seemingly incompatible disciplines; rationalism and tuma and tahara.
