Saying inquiry teaching doesn't work because you struggle with it is kinda like saying meditation doesn't work because you couldn't quiet your mind.
Often, the educators who dismiss inquiry-based learning seem to lack the exact skills and mindset it's designed to build.
Why @ChadAldeman supports 3rd grade retention policies: they shift adult behaviors.
"In threatening to hold students back if they haven’t been taught to read properly, states are warning the adults to make sure each child is on track in literacy."
Studies worth considering:
idk how two parents with standard in person 9-5 jobs have elementary aged kids because every three weeks there is some award ceremony, parade, or presentation at school that is from 9:30-9:45 am. and in the month of may, it's once a week, and don't forget the random half days.
When pupils hear rich texts read aloud, they are given access to vocabulary, syntax, knowledge and ideas they may not yet be able to manage independently.
They hear how complex language works.
They encounter words in context.
They build background knowledge.
You really understand grandkids when you've got two... and realize real quick, one is not like the other.
One of them sits nicely, uses their manners, and could probably host a tea party for royalty without breaking a sweat.
The other one? I'm pretty sure if I turned my back for five minutes, they'd reorganize the house, the dog, and possibly my entire belief system.
One says, "Grandma/Grandpa, may I please have a cookie?"
The other is already eating it... and negotiating tor two more.
I love them both the same-but let's just say one of them came with an instruction manual... and the other one came with a warning label. 😂❤️
This is a great answer from @AOC. I’ve heard a lot of people duck the are you gonna run for president question, and rarely is the answer actually inspiring.
people say "women are not paid less, they just pick empathy careers." ok.!!! but who decided nursing and teaching are worth less? like we will pay a sales guy 150k to move numbers around, but pay a nurse pennies to literally keep people alive, or give a teacher crumbs and wonder why future generations are failing every test. it is not that empathy based work is less valuable it is that we’ve normalized underpaying it because it’s "women’s work."
The people complaining have no understanding of how the product works or what the purpose of the product is. They have blamed Ed Tech and technology for the poor performance of students.
One person was complaining bc she said I-Ready reads the questions to the students at a slow pace. I tried explaining that this accessibility feature is optional but she ended up saying I was a bot.😂😂😂
The conversations around education are being led by anti-intellectual people with no background in education, no understanding of pedagogy and no understanding of the science of learning.
In my classroom, we start with building concrete conceptual knowledge and content which is embedded into The Hochman Method sentence-level instruction strategies:
• expanding kernel sentences
• because / but / so
• appositives
• retrieval practice writing
• single paragraph outlines
• concrete revision tasks
• Do Now retrieval practice
