The cervix holds a kilogram of baby against gravity for nine months, then opens to ten centimetres, then closes again.

It is a ring of tough collagen, and its job for most of a pregnancy is to stay shut while something inside it gets heavier every week.

What it does chemically is the better part. It produces a plug of thick mucus that seals the entrance, and the plug is not just a cork. It carries antimicrobial peptides and antibodies, so anything that gets past the physical barrier meets a chemical one behind it.

That plug sits there for months, guarding the entrance to a sterile space, in a part of the body that is nothing like sterile. Then the whole structure has to reverse itself. Over the last weeks the collagen holding it rigid is deliberately loosened and rearranged, water content rises, and a ring built to resist pressure becomes something that can stretch to the width of a human head.

Ten centimetres, starting from an opening you would struggle to fit a pencil through. The membranes help. The bag of fluid presses down as a wedge, and while it stays intact it does the dilating without cutting off blood flow to the placenta during contractions.

Afterwards it closes. Within days it is down to a fingertip, and within weeks it has rebuilt.

Engineers spend careers on valves that seal under load and then open on command, and none of them also make their own disinfectant, know when to start, and rebuild themselves afterwards without being serviced.

Was looking out over the churchyard & our little village green this morning, & felt an increasingly powerful rage, frustration & sorrow for the residents of Crowborough, Piddington, & no doubt, numerous other small towns & villages to come, including ourselves probably.

How can it POSSIBLY be right to intentionally upend people’s lives in this wanton & unbelievably risky fashion? No consultation. No discussion. No thought for the residents at all.

To be so outnumbered by over a thousand young men from places that are often hostile to women, gay people & other beliefs, is OBVIOUSLY going to have a devastating impact on people’s ordinary, everyday lives, safety & freedoms. That’s a no brainer… even if a flipping holiday camp was suddenly built on your doorstep, with zero notice, I bet most people would be utterly incandescent with fury.

Why is this cultural vandalism being imposed upon us, when anyone with a functioning brain could tell you these are utterly irresponsible, irrational & lunatic decisions. Of course, it’s going to change everything.

Overnight.

I can only conclude that these loathsome, cowardly, corrupt politicians actively hate our collective guts & are determined to finish life as we knew it only a short while ago. I’m looking DIRECTLY at you @andyburnham . Right into your eyes.

Honestly, I could just weep at the feckless idiocy of it all…
