@DavidAFrench It means being subject to the laws and the governing authority of the country, which essentially includes everyone except children born to foreign diplomats and hostile occupying forces
@DavidAFrench@DavidAFrench This is some real sons of the soil ethno nationalist rhetoric here. To me that’s a vision of citizenship the 14th Amendment was written to reject. The logic of his statement would naturally infer the strongest ancestral claims to Indigenous peoples.
@Apollo_1776@DavidAFrench The verbiage of the amendment is clear that all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction are citizens. Either we honor the constitution or we don’t.
@thomaschattwill@MarkHac56209533 Also, “wet bulb” temps measure combined heat & humidity. You compared the heat in Europe to Pakistan. Pakistan is a dry heat therefore making it easier for your body to cool. When wet bulb temps exceed 87 F, which they did yesterday in parts of France, people can die.
@thomaschattwill@MarkHac56209533 Cool story. I spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan in full battle rattle while using a hole in the ground as a toilet. The point isn’t whether humans can survive heat—it’s whether populations are acclimatized and have the infrastructure to handle it. Much of Europe isn’t.
@thomaschattwill@MarkHac56209533 Approximately 20-30% of homes have A/C as opposed to over 90% in the United States. You’re one of the fortunate…most ordinary Europeans aren’t staff writers at the Atlantic who own second homes.
The biggest risk in the Middle East isn’t the missiles; it’s the assumption that everything will be wrapped up in ‘two weeks.’ Here’s why I think we’re underestimating the strategic consequences:

@GasBuddyGuy If the strait remains closed until mid to late July, or even throughout summer, do you think we’ll see the prices of Brent crude reach $125? 150? 200??
@RandPaul@POTUS He unilaterally chose this ill advised war without making the case to congress or the American people. We’re stuck in another Middle East quagmire. I served four tours over there and I’m goddamn tired of spilling blood and treasure!
