Following last week’s broadcast, @itvnews published further reporting on the experiences of former Vodafone franchisees – detailing how small business owners say they were left in financial ruin after commission cuts, store pressures, and a lack of meaningful support.
The piece gives voice to franchisees who describe:
Businesses becoming unviable after sudden changes to commission
Personal debt escalating as losses mounted
Homes and savings put at risk
Mental health deteriorating under sustained financial pressure
Repeated attempts to raise concerns going unanswered
This is no longer a single story, or a single voice.
ITV’s reporting adds to a growing body of evidence, and paired with parliamentary debates, that serious questions remain about Vodafone’s franchise model, governance, and duty of care.
Vodafone continues to describe the situation as a “commercial dispute.”
But the stories ITV has now brought to light are about livelihoods, families, and lives changed forever.
The scrutiny is widening.
The questions are becoming harder to dismiss.
And the need for transparency and accountability has never been clearer.
Vodafone now has a choice:
engage openly with what is being reported – or allow the silence to speak for itself.

We’ve been Shaw-Shanked.
@itvnews reported last week on a voicemail left by Vodafone executive Jon Shaw, in which he admits that commission cuts “shanked” some franchise operators.
That word matters.
Because it didn’t come from critics, campaigners, or lawyers.
It came from inside Vodafone.
In the voicemail highlighted by ITV, Shaw appears to acknowledge what franchisees have been saying for years: that abrupt commission cuts caused severe damage to their businesses.
So here’s the question this raises:
If Vodafone executives knew franchisees were being “shanked”, why did the cuts continue?
Why were concerns dismissed as a “commercial dispute”?
Why were franchisees told the model was sustainable when internal voices recognised the harm?
Why were those affected left to absorb the consequences alone – debt, lost homes, broken trust?
And that’s why the ITV reporting is so significant.
Because it moves the conversation from allegation to acknowledgement.
Franchisees didn’t “fail.”
They were Shaw-Shanked by decisions made above their heads.
The question now is whether Vodafone’s leadership will finally confront that reality – or continue to downplay it.

The human cost of Vodafone’s actions can’t be ignored. Dan's story lays bare the truth of what Vodafone's franchise program was really like - and the moral failure at the heart of one of the UK's biggest companies.
As Dan told it:
“It certainly made me question my own life - I was looking into my own life insurance policies to see if they would cover my family in the event that I was no longer around.”
No business should ever push someone to that point.

As reported in the @guardian today, we welcome the fact that the government is now considering new franchising laws following the harrowing experiences of former Vodafone franchisees.
Our treatment by Vodafone exposed a profound imbalance of power - one that left many franchisees facing severe financial loss and deep emotional distress.
We hope ministers will now act to ensure that no other franchisee has to endure the pain and suffering that we have experienced

Vodafone’s own Commercial Operations Director , Jon Shaw, admitted the company knew its commission cuts had “shanked” franchise operators.
This voicemail - now broadcast on ITV - confirms what franchisees have been saying all along: the damage wasn’t accidental. Vodafone was fully aware of the harm its cuts were causing. But those cuts kept coming -and we’re still suffering the consequences today.
Jon Shaw, you’re right -we have been well and truly “shanked” by Vodafone and we demand answers, accountability and justice.

Thank you @justinmadders MP for highlighting our mistreatment by Vodafone and the harm that can be caused by the huge power imbalance that exists in franchising in the UK today.
We ask the government to urgently address this so that other franchisees do not have to experience what we did at the hands of Vodafone.

This evening's @itvnews exposed another shocking franchisee story - this time from fellow former franchisee Rikki Lear - along with an exclusive listen to the voicemail from a senior Vodafone executive admitting franchisees had been “shanked” by Vodafone’s commission cuts.
The segment also featured MP @TiceRichard , who has been publicly championing our fight for accountability.
Another night, another story Vodafone can’t hide from.

Member of the Fairer Franchise group Rachael Beddow-Davison appeared on ITV News today, bravely sharing her harrowing experience as a Vodafone franchisee. We’re grateful for her courage in speaking out.
Rachael is one of 62 former franchisees fighting to hold Vodafone to account. She warned the company about the pressure she was under and the impact on her health - but was ignored, telling ITV News:
“Because nobody was listening to me, I just thought it would be better for my kids – that financially, they would probably be better off if I was dead.”
This raises serious questions about Vodafone’s values, leadership and governance. Only a fully independent Parliamentary investigation can deliver real accountability.
For more, tune into ITV News again at 18:00 and 22:00 to follow our story.
🎥 Watch Rachael’s interview - this fight is about more than business. It’s about accountability, dignity and change.

Puts everything into perspective! Truly heartbreaking.
The mindset is elite, to take the worst of situations and still somehow see positives is truly inspiring!
What a man!
