Our second debate at @StudentPW conference features Council leader Jas Athwal from Redbridge and leader Darren Rodwell of Barking and Dagenham. Lots to debate on affordable housing/viability but clear case for using student accomm to make areas more vibrant for current residents
Fascinating look into how Co and micro living will grow out of the PBSA. Thank you to John Kenny, Iilya Blazic and Martin Skinner for their insights. @StudentPW @IrwinMitchellRE
Team are looking forward to a stimulating debate in product placemaking and delivery at @StudentPW conference. Co living, London policy, move to the regions and lots of other great topics to discuss. @IrwinMitchellRE
Flexibility and choice needed, including in the tenancies from student accommodation providers, needed to cope with changes to HE. @StudentPW @IrwinMitchellRE
Lots of headwinds affecting the HE sector, as outlined by keynote panel. Brexit, funding and fees, global competition all impacting on the customers for student accomm. @StudentPW @IrwinMitchellRE
Great to be here at the Property Week student housing conference, HE keynote speakers looking at brexit, fees, funding and other headwinds affecting student accomm. @StudentPW @IrwinMitchellRE
@PropertyWeek@lawbowles@LucianCook I think there is too much institutional/planning suspicion of these for them to take off. They are seen as ways of compromising on affordable housing standards rather than offering an urban lifestyle choice. A shame really as why not offer it and increase choice? #residebate
@PropertyWeek@lawbowles@LucianCook I think it is mainstream. If RPs are given a slightly kinder environment we will see more of it. The most viable and sustainable schemes are mixed BTR, affordable, and for sale. #residebate
@lawbowles@PropertyWeek@LIVconsult @jds_thplc @SamJPartington1 @LucianCook Agreed - it is just then we compare ourselves to US or Germany we don't acknowledge unique factors like FM or like the privatised East German housing that led to those markets developing. #residebate
@PropertyWeek@lawbowles @SamJPartington1 @LucianCook @jds_thplc Brits love and understand buying houses and will do that regardless of tax. It will take decades for BTR to make an impact on the rental apartment market let alone market for rented houses. #residebate
@MarcopoloLondon@PropertyWeek@Savills@LucianCook@RESIevent Most human rights campaigners would say that there isn't currently a right to have a home, just a right to have your home protected by the law. I don't know if we should go further than having a duty to house those in need, or if a specific human right would help or hinder that
@PropertyWeek@rjekerr We think looking at the SDLT rate on BTR dwellings and portfolios would be a start. Also looking at the tax treatment for all of those privately held PRS portfolios that older individuals have built up and want to divest. #irwinmitchellre#residebate
