My take: the proposed changes aren’t a big ask. Permanent residency is a long-term commitment. It should only go to people who can demonstrate they’ll be stable and not a liability. Thinking years into the future isn’t unreasonable. It’s the entire point.

People who agree with me: Quietly competent adults who already have PR or are fully capable of earning it the normal way. They just get on with their lives.

People who disagree with me: Working holiday warriors, pro-mass immigration advocates, communists, failed Twitch streamers, ALT/eikaiwa lifers, anime industry dreamers, and various other 30-plus-year-old children still waiting for someone to hand them permanent residency like a participation trophy.
