BREAKING NEWS: Cure for sickle cell disorder is now available at sickle cell foundation Nigeria, LUTH. You can get it as a Nigeria 🇳🇬.

The Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN), in partnership with Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), offers bone marrow transplantation (also called stem cell transplantation) as a curative treatment for sickle cell disorder (SCD). This is established as a known cure for eligible patients, and the program has been active and performing procedures in Nigeria since around 2024.

All the information in this video are wrong. This is not sòbìà and sòbìà does not enter ones legs.

What's known as sòbìà in Yorùbá is Guinea worm disease. It's not caused by a worm entering one's leg, no.

People get infected with Guinea worms when they drink water from ponds and stagnant sources that have tiny creatures called copepods. These copepods accidentally eat Guinea worm larvae. When people drink this water with copepods that have Guinea worm larvae inside them, they can get Guinea worm disease.

Alternatively, if animals like fish and frogs who have ingested these copepods are eaten without being cooked properly, for people who fish from these ponds, one may get infected too.

After the copepods are swallowed, they die and let the larvae out. These larvae then go through the stomach and the wall of the intestines and travel to the tissues in the abdomen where they find a partner and mate. After mating, the female worm becomes pregnant and grows to be about 2 to 3 feet long, as wide as a cooked spaghetti noodle, over the next year.

Around one year after getting infected, when the adult female worm is ready to let her babies out, she moves right under the skin. This makes a bump or blister on the skin where the pregnant adult female worm will come out eventually. This blister can show up on any part of the body, but it's most common on the legs and feet. It's really painful and feels like a burning sensation, and within a day or two, it pops open. The worm then begins to come out. It may take two day or even a week of pain for it to fully come out. But the worm cannot infect someone by entering their legs.

When a person or animal with the pregnant female worm in their body goes into water, it makes the Guinea worm release a milky white liquid with lots of baby worms into the water. Tiny water fleas called copepods then swallow these baby worms, and the whole process starts over again.

The good news is majority of you reading this have no chance of contracting Guinea worm disease as you don't drink water from pond. Also, it's been long I read about its incidence in Nigeria. It's in Chad that humans still suffer from it in some areas.

If you must drink pond water, boil and filter

But then, if the organism in the video is not Guinea worm, what is it? It looks like horsehair worms (I'm not 100% sure). Just like guinea worm, this one cannot infect someone. It is their larva that infect insects such as such beetles, cockroaches, mantises, etc.
