I would like to clear the air on a technical comment made by me in a recent interaction with ANI. The comment has been completely taken out of context, leading to unscientific conclusions being drawn around unfounded mileage reduction claims on E20 fuel.

My reference was to the chemical characteristics of ethanol in comparison with petrol. It was not a statement that E20 petrol causes a reduction in vehicle mileage.
I must share that supported by scientific evidence, the use of E-20 fuel gives better acceleration, better ride quality and lowered carbon emissions by approximately 30% as compared to E10 fuel. Ethanol’s higher-octane number (~108.5 compared to petrol’s 84.4) makes Ethanol-blended fuels a valuable alternative for higher- octane requirements that is crucial for modern high-compression engines

RON 95 with blending of Ethanol 20, results in better anti knocking properties and performance. Vehicles tuned for E20 fuel deliver better acceleration which is a very important factor in city driving conditions. Additionally, Ethanol’s higher heat of vaporization reduces intake manifold temperatures, increasing air-fuel mixture density and boosting volumetric efficiency.

E20 causes a “drastic” reduction in fuel efficiency are misplaced. Vehicle mileage is influenced by a variety of factors beyond just fuel type. These include driving habits, maintenance practices such as oil changes and air filter cleanliness, tyre pressure and alignment, and even air conditioning load.

E20 has proven technical advantages, the benefits of which have to be experienced in the correct scientific context. Its higher octane value helps the fuel resist knocking, thereby supporting smoother engine performance. Its higher heat of vaporisation helps reduce intake manifold temperatures in gasoline engines, improving the density of the air-fuel mixture and supporting better volumetric efficiency.

Very importantly, E20 contributes to a marked reduction in harmful emissions, reduces dependence on fuel imports, strengthens India’s energy security and supports cleaner air.

The outrage over ethanol blending is a textbook example of how complex policy gets reduced to viral ragebait.

The claim that "India is burning food while people go hungry" ignores how ethanol economics actually works.

The video explains something many critics conveniently leave out:
•⁠ ⁠Ethanol in India isn't simply "food diverted into fuel."
•⁠ ⁠It is part of a calibrated policy that balances farmer incomes, energy security and surplus crop management.
•⁠ ⁠It reduces our dependence on imported crude oil, saving valuable foreign exchange.
•⁠ ⁠It creates a stable market for farmers while strengthening India's strategic resilience.

Every major energy transition involves trade offs. Serious debate should be about optimising those trade-offs, not manufacturing outrage with half-truths.

The Russia-Ukraine war was a reminder that nations dependent on imported energy pay a heavy strategic price. Diversifying fuel sources isn't ideology, it's national security.

Don't fall for sensational headlines. Understand the economics before amplifying the outrage.

Facts: Ethanol uses only surplus rice after national food security needs are met.

This simple experiment destroys one of the biggest myths about E20 fuel. 🚗💧

🟢 A: Pure E20 – Clean, uniform fuel.

⚠️ B: E20 + Water – Once enough water enters, phase separation occurs. A dense ethanol-water layer settles at the bottom, leaving petrol above.

⚠️ C: Pure Petrol + Water – Petrol and water never mix. Water immediately sinks to the bottom while petrol floats above.

Here’s what most people miss: Water can contaminate both E20 and pure petrol through condensation, contaminated storage tanks, flooding, or a leaking fuel cap.

Your fuel pump draws from the lowest point of the tank. Whether it ingests the ethanol-water layer (B) or free water (C), the result can be engine stalling, corrosion, injector damage, and expensive repairs.

The problem isn’t E20. The problem is water.
