What stayed with me about Klara and the Sun was how quietly it built. I was surprised, moved, and saddened at different moments, but the emotions were never loud. They were simply there and deeply felt.

That’s the kind of writing I admire—and aspire to: a story that leaves the reader with something to carry after the last page.

@hyperflesh I recently finished Emily St. John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility and really enjoyed it. Time, memory, technology, and the nature of reality, but grounded in very human lives. Definitely worth a look if you haven’t read it.

For six years, I was an active member of an assisted living community. I watched clients — and my own parents — age, diminish, and eventually die.
That long closeness to the end of life pushed me to think hard about destiny, evolution, and what it means to remain a person. It helped me distinguish love from control.

The Books That Stayed With Me While Writing The Narrowing

Over the last two years of writing The Narrowing, four books stayed with me in a particularly deep way: The Midnight Library, Never Let Me Go, Klara and the Sun, and The Overstory.
Each one resonated with me not just as a reader, but as a person. Together they explore memory, choice, love, what it means to be human, and the quiet lives that move alongside our own.
It’s my hope to build on the questions these books raise — and, in some small way, to add something fresh of my own.

Books I Love
During the critique process for my novel I finally read Klara and the Sun and The Overstory.
One watches the world through an artificial consciousness learning what love costs.
The other asks us to consider the long, quiet lives of trees and the human stories tangled among them.
Both deepened the way I think about memory, attention, and what it means to remain human — themes that were already at the heart of what I was writing.
