My thread on the #assistedplaces scheme, widening participation, #WorkingClass identity, social mobility and aspiration, small humiliations, and ice cream tubs. @WalesArtsReview encouraged me to turn it into an article/memoir: https://t.co/EyR0k8UMc6 https://t.co/GCRF6dzPk8
I've noticed quite a few posts recently about academia and working class identity. I've been thinking a lot about my own journey, especially since I got a permanent lectureship late last year, in open access adult education.
@UswitchUK recommended Sky's low level 150mbps package would be 4 x faster than our current @youfibre 900mbps package 😂 - if we take YouFibre's advice and turn off the WiFi light bulbs & the telly, maybe we'll see faster speeds while we sit here in the dark....
Currently have 3 lightbulbs, 2 phones, & Sky actively taking up bandwidth. All other devices are on standby. Paying for 900mbps, of which they say 450mbps is the max that can be provided on WiFi. Have 3 eero 6 meshes running & apparently we're the problem 🤔 @youfibre#FullOfShit
@OgiWales it's interesting that when a customer tries to write a message asking to leave your service, you keep opening new windows... You've called me over 36 times since my contract came up for renewal - I'd just like to say "let me go". I've got enough on as it is.
@tfwrail I had 2 advance singles on the 12.18 train from Port Talbot to Cardiff just now but the train was so full we couldn't get on. Next train is GWR. How do I get a refund? Or can I use on GWR? Many thanks!
I'll be over on B l u e S k y if you want me. Considering deletion here. This place helped me find my voice as a writer but it's a very different (hellscape) environment now.

@tfwrail I know I often post to highlight where things have gone wrong but, equally, I think it's important to let staff know when they've done a really good job.
As an aside, the social media team have to put up with a lot & you all do your best with us grumpy customers! Thank you, too!
Hi @tfwrail the on-board announcements on my train just now were so quiet I couldn't hear them. Only realised my train was going backwards (in relation to my intended destination of Cathays) when I jumped off to & heard platform announcements. Please could you feed this back. 😞
@tfwrail Some happy feedback: on the 17.26 Eastbrook to Cardiff Central this evening, the guard did an announcement about the train changing destination at Central. Then he came through the carriages to check we'd all heard. Excellent customer service. Thank you!
@tfwrail It sounded like the actual conductor. The speakers were so muffled it was impossible to hear any of the detail. When the quality's that bad on the on- board equipment, they really need to do a walk through to make sure everyone knows. Very glad to not be in Radyr by accident!

@gemhow I saw so many parallels with my own working-class upbringing and that sense of feeling out of whack with everyone around you. You captured that sense of alienation so well - gave me goosebumps. I do hope our paths cross at some point & huge congratulations on publishing this.
Haven't been able to read fiction in nearly a year (because everything has been quite shit.) This has reminded me why I love to read. (It's a brilliant novel about working-class Welsh women's experience).
Couldn't even pick up a book & now can't put this down. Thank you, @gemhow

@tfwrail Thank you - appreciate your quick reply. It's impossible to clearly hear what's being announced on the platform when you're already on the train, especially in the older style trains with doors at the very end and/or at busy times of day. Good communication is key!
@tfwrail the delayed 15.50 train to Penarth from Central is not stopping at Grangetown or Dingle Road. This was *not* announced on the train so any passengers who had already joined before Central had no clue they couldn't get off before Pen. This is really poor customer service.
One passenger was really upset as he would now be late. It really should be announced on both the train and the platform so passengers can make informed choices. Appreciate if this could be fed back to station staff and crew.
