Comedy of errors at @IndiGo6E
Had a flight from IXC to LKO on 6th/Nov/2023. Reached the airport well in time, was told that flight has been cancelled and has been rescheduled to 7th/Nov. Apparently all messages sent to me for intimation had failed. The staff was kind enough to book IXC-DEL-LKO and expedite my boarding. Reached Delhi and realised the DEL - LKO had been booked for 7th/Nov. 😬 The ground staff rescheduled me to 6th/Nov and expedited my boarding. There is a method to the madness 😂 Thank you @IndiGo6E for messing it and fixing it, all at the same time.
We often showcase our success as ( retina ) surgeons on social media, whether it's attached retinas, closed macular holes, achieving 6/6 post-op vision, or spot-on diagnoses that save the day. Failed or challenging cases are usually reserved for conferences, discussed mainly from a clinical standpoint. The trauma of prolonged prone positioning, post-operative precautions, and the fear of vision loss are seldom addressed. Yet, as retina surgeons, we may frequently encounter such cases.
I'd like to share the remarkable journey of a young female banker, whose thriving life was halted by a detached retina in her left eye. More than the vison, she was concerned about the impact it would have on her career. I reassured her that this condition isn't uncommon and she would be back to normal soon.
Ten months, six surgeries (in both eyes), 60 days of prone positioning, and six months of post-op precautions later, she's a transformed person. Throughout this ordeal, she never lost faith, and our team went out of their way to make things financially and emotionally comfortable for her. We spent a lot of time talking about the issue and the possible reasons for the detachment , detachment in the other eye and re-detachments. We tried to make her visits to the hospital expedited with less waiting time and round the clock support with the help of our councelling team.
Despite the challenges, her retinas are now attached, and we've restored her normal vision. She's on her way back to her demanding job.
Is this a tale of success or failure? Is it about our resilience or hers? Is it about our faith in our skills or her faith in us? Is it a story with a happy ending or a story of prolonged trauma?
Perhaps it's a mix of both. As retina surgeons, we face challenging cases that may require multiple visits, surgeries, lasers, or injections. Unfavorable outcomes or unsatisfied patients are part of the job. It's hard not to empathize in such situations, and it can be traumatizing for both the patient and the surgeon. However, with 100% sincerity, honesty, and the right amount of empathy towards our patients, this difficult journey becomes easier for our patients and us!
The banker lady could have been a surgical nightmare but instead she is a beacon of hope to us and all our patients!
