1/3 Just came home from the Theo Murphy meeting on the science of love - one of the best scientific events I've ever attended. Huge thanks to Co-Organisers @RoyalSociety S. Craig Roberts, Piotr Sorokowski, Agnieszka Sorokowska & Jan Havlíček, all Speakers, Presenters & Attendees!
I just finished two days at a Royal Society meeting on love. Presenting there is probably the most prestigious thing I will do in my life. Also… there was a castle out the front of my hotel.
1/3 Contrary to Shakespeare’s assertion that “love is blind and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that themselves commit” our study provides evidence that lovers easily recognize their partners’ flaws. 97% of participants identified at least 1 flaw of their partners.
RIP Robert Trivers - the Einstein of evolutionary biology and one the greatest thinkers of our age.
Among other things, Trivers came up with parental investment theory, reciprocal altruism theory, and parent-offspring conflict theory.
@SteveStuWill This sample was all single. That's part of the reason they are single. The real average would be notably higher (romantic love researcher here...)
Chris Williamson's brutal wake-up call in 46 seconds:
“Adults don't exist.”
He runs down the list:
- Steve Jobs delayed pancreatic cancer treatment for carrot juice and acupuncture.
- Mozart drowned in debt, constantly begging friends for money.
- Nietzsche caught syphilis in a brothel and sold only 300 copies of his work in his lifetime.
- Martin Luther King had affairs with over 40 women and spent his last night with two of them.
- Isaac Newton wasted 30 years on alchemy pseudoscience his heirs hid out of embarrassment.
The point lands hard:
Don't put any adult on a pedestal.
Kill your gurus.
The adults aren't going to save you — they don't even exist.
Raw, unflinching, and impossible to unhear.
Which "hero" or guru did you once idolize… until you learned the messy truth behind them?
🇳🇱 In the early 2000s, Dutch supermodel Karen Mulder became a tragic figure of the "whistleblower's curse" long before the world was ready to listen.
At the height of her fame, Mulder broke the industry’s code of silence during a French television appearance, making explosive allegations of systemic abuse, blackmail, and sexual exploitation involving high-level elites including figures now famously linked to the Epstein network.
The retaliation was swift and devastating. Her claims were immediately dismissed as a mental breakdown, leading to her being forcibly committed to a psychiatric hospital.
The fashion industry and media painted her as "unstable," effectively ending one of the most successful modeling careers in history. While she was silenced and marginalized, the networks she attempted to expose continued to operate in the shadows for nearly two more decades.
Today, Mulder’s story serves as a haunting reminder of how the powerful use the "madness" narrative to bury inconvenient truths.

Trigger warnings don’t help people emotionally prepare for distressing material, or lead them to avoid it – the two things they’re intended to do. Their main effect seems to be to make people more anxious about encountering the material.
