@GacktRhapsodos@kabrutusdeid Not by a long shot. FF7 was what brought rare jRPG's to the forfront of Western gaming's market awareness more than any other title in the series.
FFX was hugely popular, absolutely, and the greater sales in Japan, but FF7 still remains the cultural icon.
@_josephine0_ Heavily Invest Apple
(When I was 16, Apple stock was under $0.40 cents. Now it's almost $340. About a $23 million difference with my spending power back then, give or take)
@oelma__ And at the same time we have instant communication that somehow feels more out of touch with each other.
Yet at the same time, it's easier than ever to find a community with like-minded people.
It's really quite imposssible to determine if "better or worse"
@oelma__ I mean, it was just different. And not purely because of internet. It was just a different time in general.
Crime has dropped nearly by half, despite the news.
Prices have skyrocketed, esp homes.
The world has "Shrunk" where anything outside your town was almost exotic.
......
@WitKingof@Obsessive_Gamer They are. RPGs are about Role Playing a character concept. Levels, Abilitiy Scores, all that is just extra mechanical padding that most use because it's traditional.
There are lots of amazing RPG's that don't even use levels. Vampire the Masquerade, shadowrun, kenshi...all great
@Obsessive_Gamer@RJNeruma Which is it?
You opened with "An RPG requires you to grind"
Then when pointed out "Grinding is not at all a requirement for an RPG" you said "Agreed"
So which is it. Does an RPG require you to grind, or is grinding not a requirement?
@Obsessive_Gamer@SgtPepper944@AlastairGrayson It's an optional choice. If you don't like it, don't use it. It's like the same nonsense people make a fuss over with so-called "Woke" options in games. If you don't like it, don't chose that option.
But more to the point, there's soooo many ways to enjoy an RPG beyond grinding.
@Obsessive_Gamer@SgtPepper944@AlastairGrayson You have a very narrow view of what RPGs -HAVE- to entail. Not every RPG requires grinding. Not every RPG has to be souls-hard. Not every RPG has to require repetitious random/farmable encounters to progress.
There are plenty of RPG's with finite enemies, no grind, still great
@lady_valor_07 Head nods passing on the street, raised fingers off the steering wheel when someone let's you go ahead of them. It's just common courtesy.
Esp. when there's so many instances of road rage and people doing crazy things every day.... a little extra courtesy doesn't hurt.
@RyantheRed22@MericaOnly1776@AmericaPapaBear It's basically teaching how numbers relate to each other to mentally adjust the problem into easier to conceptualize values.
Instead of trying to sit and add 48+52, you learn howi they relate and can quickly turn it into a much easier to do 50+50
@RyantheRed22@MericaOnly1776@AmericaPapaBear Teaches number relationships too, not just base arithmetic.
Old: 48+52: "Ok, 8+2 is 10, so 0, carry the 1 over to the tens column, 4+5 and also +1 from that carry = 10, add the 0 = 100
New: 48+52: "Ok, 48 is 2 from 50, and 52 is too, so 48+2 and 52 -2 is same as 50+50 so = 100
@CloutStrife1st Why does everything have to be a souls-like or require bashing your head against a wall before beating a single fight?
Instead of making you re-play the game in NG+, they just put the optional hard stuff in-line with the main game. FF games have never been particulary hard.
@SalCreativeLabs@Genki_JPN Then this is just an easy(er) mode. What's the problem?
Even with the option, you're still fighting main story encounters, still engaging with the combat and similar content.
All it seems to do is eliminate repetative the grinding open-world RPG's tend towards. And Optional.
@CMDR_Shylph At 25% integrity, the FSD is going to malfunction pretty frequently, no? Even if they tried to jump out they may not have been able to if it malfunctioned a few times in a row.
@lofi_lover0930 Instead of requiring a replay in NG+, they just made the "hard mode" content optionaly available in the main playthrough as side-content.
So you don't have to replay huge swaths of the game just to get a challenge.
Who knows if it'll work out or not (shrug) but it's there.
@DarkLightsWrath I mean, I definitely don't blame you. They're completely different combat systems.
I bounced off the Remake/Rebirth action'y combat HARD... but I love me some good ole' ATB or actual turn-based like FF 1-3 was.
It's also a very endearing art style
@VapidLight@GooseyKaboosey In a nutshell; instead of requring a NG+ where you have to replay the entire game again for a harder experience, they just added "Hard" optional content playable in your main playthrough.
So instead of repeating huge chunks of the game, the hard challenges are integrated.
@warper2509 Is it any different than an XP / AP multiplier option in the pixel remasters? Or the option to turn off random encounters? Did those options ruin the original games?
Just think of the option as an Easy+ mode or similar optional accesibility option you don't have to use.
@BluSatire I've never enjoyed the aspect of old games that require a repetative grind just in order to be high level enough to feasibly access the main story. It's boring and repetative and not actually entertaining most of the time.
I'm all for game design or options that avoid that.
@BluSatire People always had jobs, but cRPG games were also generally a shorter back then, too.
Games like BG2 and Planescape are like, 45-60hrs.
Entire OG FF7 was about 80hrs max.
Remake is upwards of 100hrs, Rebirth is 160+
Games today take up way more time than they used to.
