Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.

I am NOT keeping quiet on this at all.

As a veteran myself, and as someone who comes from a family of veterans who served this country and broke barriers themselves, I find this absolutely disgraceful.

I strongly disagree with any effort to remove Doris “Dorie” Miller’s name from the future USS Doris Miller (CVN-81). Whoever thought this was a bright idea is completely wrong.

This should not happen.

Doris Miller’s name is not there because of politics. His name is there because of courage, sacrifice, service, and American history.

Miller was born in Waco, Texas, in 1919 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1939. At a time when the Navy was segregated and opportunities for Black sailors were severely restricted, Miller served as a mess attendant — one of the few positions available to Black sailors.

Then came December 7, 1941.

During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller was serving aboard the USS West Virginia. In the middle of explosions, fire, enemy aircraft, and death, Miller helped move his wounded commanding officer and assisted injured sailors.

Then, despite having no formal training as an anti-aircraft gunner, Miller took control of a machine gun and fired at attacking Japanese aircraft.

Think about that.

A Black sailor serving in a segregated Navy — a Navy that limited what he was even allowed to do — did not hesitate when his country came under attack.

He fought.

For his heroism, Doris Miller became the first Black American to receive the Navy Cross.

And his service did not end at Pearl Harbor.

Miller continued serving during World War II. On November 24, 1943, at only 24 years old, he was killed when the USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed during operations in the Gilbert Islands.

He gave his life for this country.

THAT is the kind of American whose name belongs on a United States Navy aircraft carrier.

And this is why this hits differently for me as a veteran and as someone whose own family has a history of military service and breaking barriers. I understand what those names, those uniforms, and those legacies represent.

Honoring trailblazers like Doris Miller tells future generations that their sacrifices mattered and that their place in our military history will not simply disappear when political leadership changes.

The future USS Doris Miller represents more than one man. It represents generations of Black service members who served this nation with courage and distinction even while being denied equal treatment by the very country they were willing to die defending.

And let me be clear: this is not about whether you support or oppose President Donald Trump.

A sitting president does not need to replace an American war hero in order to be honored. There are other ships. There will be other opportunities.

Doris Miller EARNED this honor through courage, blood, sacrifice, and service.

Some things should be bigger than politics.

Some names should transcend politics.

Doris “Dorie” Miller is one of those names.

Keep his name on CVN-81.

Honor the sailor.
Honor the hero.
Honor the sacrifice.
Honor our history.
