Seems so. I’m watching this whole thing and I’m just shocked.
Democratic governors and politicians in the U.S. insult Trump nonstop — pure political bullshit — and somehow our side up here thinks the same energy is smart. Mark Carney meets with Obama a couple months ago at some progressive think-tank event in Toronto, and now he’s hired an American Democratic strategist as the first-ever COO of the PMO. She doesn’t even speak French. The same Carney who piled on the Air Canada CEO for not speaking French and basically forced that retirement over language. The irony is thick. Ethics issues already flagged on her too. This is the dichotomy we live in.
They spent weeks telling us everything was fine, talks were progressing, we were close. Then at the absolute 11th hour they pull the plug, walk away, and suddenly it’s “we got attacked,” “we’re at war,” dollar-for-dollar tariffs. Why? The U.S. side is saying Canada has always gotten favourable treatment because of proximity — basically treated a bit like another state — and that era is over. If the terms were actually favourable, why walk? Conservatives are already demanding the transcripts of what was really on the table. One big reason they don’t want to recall Parliament is because they’d have to produce them and face real scrutiny.
Meanwhile Carney is out making another multi-billion-dollar announcement with our tax money (icebreakers in Quebec, more spending), mic problems, and he smirks and says “unlike some other politicians I’m not going to insinuate this is a conspiracy.” The look on his face… just poking the bear for no good reason.
The United States is ten times our size. They have real, signed trade deals all over the world. Carney keeps talking about the deals he’s “signed” — letters of intent, MOUs, aspirational paper. Not the same thing.
Ontario, B.C., and Quebec — the provinces that will feel this pain the fastest — have premiers acting like yappy little Chihuahuas, cheering him on. Doug Ford calls himself a conservative but he’s been Carney’s cheerleader from day one. Saskatchewan is more measured but still going along. Small businesses are already saying they can’t survive a week of this. I lived through the NEP in Alberta under Pierre Trudeau — whole towns in receivership, no jobs, despair, divorces, suicides. It took over a decade to recover. That program wasn’t even in place that long. This feels like the same dangerous game after years of Liberal policies that left us with housing crises, kids stuck in basements, weak GDP, capital flight, brain drain, and debt through the roof.
Trump does not back down when pushed. He stands taller. I watched the assassination attempt video — blood on his face, “Fight, fight, fight.” That told me everything. Waiting for midterms won’t change that he’s still president. Carney is playing a high-risk bluff with the most exposed provinces and the smallest businesses as the collateral, while refusing to recall Parliament to actually debate it. The rhetoric is war. The accountability is zero.
This is not strength. This is dangerous
