The govt's Student Loan Plan 2 repayment freeze in April 2027 must be reversed. It isn't moral.

I'm concerned that my debate with Kemi Badenoch this morning distracts from the most immediate problem. In April 2027 Rachel Reeves will freeze the Plan 2 student loan threshold until 2030 which by then will increase graduate repayments by £300/yr more.

This is effectively a unilateral negative breach of the student loan contract. Students were told the threshold would rise with average earnings. No commercial lender would be allowed to do this. The govt shouldn't do it either.

Changing the terms of future students loans is a political decision - people may not like it but it is transparent. Negatively changing the terms of contracts already signed, and long in place, is a breach of natural justice.

@zaynhasn I also recognise that some consultants could be rejecting perfectly reasonable referrals too. Perhaps a system where if there is a referral that is rejected and a GP disagrees- it goes to a senior GP/ consultant in the ICB to review and be the final arbitrator?

@zaynhasn The flip side is there are plenty of inappropriate referrals which frustrates the patient as it delays getting the right diagnosis and treatment and overwhelms the system delaying other patients getting their appt. I have def seen a rise of this with the advent of non GPs

@aruwij Because the moment you introduce rules that make visas hard to get- tourists just opt to go elsewhere in a competitive market. Travel agents just switch. The rare isolated incident of a tourist begging is the price worth paying for all the other money that tourists bring 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Dr_Done_ In the past during strikes the IMGs were with UK grads- there was solidarity in one profession. Lately the rhetoric has been rather ugly. The IMGs are prob cashing in as they might not have a job tomorrow and worried about their future!
