The 'Monumental Olive Tree of Gortyn' in Crete. This tree which is about 1600 years old, has a split trunk that partially embraces a Roman column. It is located in an old olive grove at the ancient site of Gortyn. Crete has over 30 million olive trees and this tree is just one of a few that have been declared as monuments by the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities (ACOM). The oldest olive tree in Crete (also declared a monument) is located in Vouves and is estimated to be about 3,500 years old (though estimates have ranged between 2000 and 4000 years). 📷 by me.
