This morning I had the opportunity to speak with Craig Cohen on Houston Matters about patience.
It was a lot of fun, and hopefully, our conversation was helpful!
Link is below. My segment starts about 15 minutes into the show.

1/ Most therapists would do well to focus less on “what to say” & more on “how to listen”
And if a patient expects us to have something to say or have an answer, it’s perfectly alright to say “I don't know” or “I don't understand yet, let's keep talking & see what else comes up”
Just asking. Just saying. Just putting it out there. Just being honest.
The use of just this way denies that you don't "only" have this one intention. You ask for reasons beyond asking. You choose to say something beyond simply being honest. You have feelings & desires at play.
We don’t get scared easily. We have several highly skilled therapists who want you to bring all of yourself. Your anger, shame, sadness, and trauma. Bring your alligator self. Your therapist will still want you to come back.
Alligator or otherwise - we want to see you later
An effective psychotherapy relationship is a mutual relationship. It must work for two people, not one at other’s expense
If a patient is capable of this, we build on it. If not, we work to develop a capacity for healthier relationships—starting with therapy relationship itself
“Empathy is an antidote to righteousness, although it’s very difficult to empathize across a moral divide”
- Jonathan Haidt
I’m very much enjoying his book “The Righteous Mind” after being recommended it for at least a year by many people.
