Whether you’re running a small practice or a large health system, one truth remains — healthcare is also a business.

Understanding the numbers behind the care helps us make better decisions for our patients and for our teams. I encourage anyone entering this field to learn...

Valuing what we do starts with how we see ourselves—that self-respect ripples outward to our teams, our systems, and our patients.

Primary care is one of the most valuable parts of our health system — yet too often, that value isn’t reflected in how it’s treated.

If we as primary care physicians don’t advocate for ourselves, our time, and our work, no one else will...

When we trust and empower the full team, patients get care sooner, and the whole system works better.

Too often, the system pushes people toward two choices: wait to see your primary care doctor, or head to the emergency room.

Neither is always the right answer.

Many skilled professionals in health care — nurses, pharmacists, PAs — can handle much of patients' day-to-day needs.

If we use it wisely, AI won’t take our place — it’ll give us more space to do what matters most: connecting with patients.

There’s a lot of talk about AI replacing primary care — but I see it differently.
AI isn’t here to replace us. It’s here to refocus us.

To broaden what we do.
To remove the unnecessary consultations and administrative noise that get in the way of real patient care.

ready to meet challenges of the healthcare system head-on.

Sometimes, stepping back and supporting one another is exactly what gives us the motivation to step forward again.

In healthcare, we spend so much time caring for others that we often forget to care for our own teams — and ourselves.

Taking time to recharge, connect, and invest in the people around us isn’t a luxury; it’s what allows us to return to our patients renewed and...

One of my mentors, Dr. Lewis Barnett, once told me, “It’s okay not to know the answers — you just need to be willing to be the lead learner.”

That idea has stuck with me throughout my career...

Today, with the tools we have — especially AI — primary care physicians have more ways than ever to learn, grow, and support our patients.

It’s an exciting time to be in primary care. We don’t always need ten specialists to find the right answers...

connection, not replace it. We have to remember, listening, engaging, and showing empathy are skills too, and they’re just as vital as any tool we use in the exam room.

I’ve noticed something interesting with some of the younger doctors, when ambient AI takes over their note-taking, they’re not sure what to do with their hands. Without the keyboard, it can feel unfamiliar to just talk to patients.

Technology should make room for human...

write longer notes. We got into it to listen and to care. It’s time we make sure our systems reflect that.

Somewhere along the way, our priorities in documentation shifted. The more complicated the note, the higher the billing potential — but the tradeoff is time. And that time often comes at the expense of real connection with our patients.

We didn’t get into medicine to...

One of the things I’ve reflected on over the years is how deeply personal the relationship between primary care doctors and their patients really is.

When you’ve known someone for years, cared for them, listened to them, celebrated and grieved with them, they stop being...

[Dan McCarter, MD FAAFP @DrDanMcCarter]

just “patients.” They become friends.

And that makes it awfully hard sometimes to talk about costs or to charge for your time. But that closeness is also what makes primary care so meaningful, it’s built on trust, not transactions.
