Associate Professor at American University @AU_SPA. Author of Foreign Fighters, Biotechnology and International Security, Transnational Actors in War and Peace.
I’m on the Irregular Warfare podcast with Kyle Atwell talking about foreign fighters in Ukraine and beyond. I had the flu so be gentle, but fellow guest, journalist Colin Freeman, is fantastic. Please give a listen!

This new report written by me, @AU_SPA PhD student Rachel Williams, and @theGCERF colleagues examines successful rehabilitation of families of ISIS foreign fighters by their home countries. Years of data from the field show how to deal with ongoing threat posed by detainee camps.
🎊 New GCERF Knowledge Product Out Now!
🌐 Based on 07 years of rehabilitation and reintegration (R&R) programming experience across 15 countries, GCERF is proud to launch its latest knowledge product "Working with Returnees from Northeast Syria and Iraq: Rehabilitation and Reintegration Lessons from GCERF."
💡 Nearly 40,000 #ISIS fighters and their families including thousands of children still remain in camps in Northeast Syria. Without R&R support, the risk of re-radicalisation persists. But GCERF’s work shows that, with the right approach, returnees can become powerful agents of #peace and #Resilience . This evidence-based publication outlines key lessons learned and good practices for tailored psychosocial support, localised case management, and community reintegration strategies.
👏 Congratulations to the authors for producing a timely report. We extend our gratitude to our government partners, civil society partners and GCERF colleagues for sharing their practical experiences, knowledge and feedback.

It’s official, Dr. Daymon in the house!
Thanks and so much gratitude to my amazing committee members @milleridriss@galwaygrrl@AmarAmarasingam and my Chair @drdavidmalet. Your insights, expertise, and guidance mean the world.
@CyprienFluzin@helene__olsen@KingsCollegeLon Really pleased to have the opportunity to work with you, Cyprien! And I’m grateful to Helene and KCL for putting together such a fantastic workshop.
It was a real pleasure working with @JosephKYoung and @joshmolloy101 on this. It took 5 years for this study to be published, so junior scholars take heart to hang in there when the going gets rough in academic publishing. I think you’ll agree this one was worth the wait. /6
So happy this article is published, and I want to highlight why you should read it.
First, one author is a former YPG volunteer and scholar, & it made a massive difference having a trained researcher who is also a subject community member. Other fields of social science know 1/
Foreign Fighter Mobilization: YPG Volunteers in Their Own Words - David Malet (@drdavidmalet), Joshua Farrell-Molloy (@joshmolloy101), and Joseph Young (@JosephKYoung), Terrorism and Political Violence: https://t.co/R9TQWhihZS
Personally, I was most interested that some respondents considered being foreign fighters in several different places before going with YPG, some weren’t interested in fighting at all but really liked the Kurdish political project, and others were motivated by ISIS atrocities 5/
New article alert! @drdavidmalet and I and @joshmolloy101 interviewed westerners who volunteered with the Kurds in Syria during the fight with ISIS. Free eprint to first 50 folks that download! https://t.co/1crXh2o0Kt

As PhD program director for my department, I’m getting ready for Admissions season.
Exactly 20 years ago, I was getting ready to apply to programs.
People are asking me what they should write in their applications. My acceptance ratio was bad, so don’t do what I did!

In the coming weeks, the PRIN project team "Returning Foreign Fighters (ReFF)" will hire 3 postdoctoral fellows. The project aims to study the trajectories followed by Italian foreign fighters who went abroad to fight and then returned home. @TulliUmberto https://t.co/IxVyVBIebP
Australians just widely rejected a constitutional amendment to provide Aboriginal people consultative representation to Parliament. Indigenous Australians remain socio-economically marginalized.
Remind me, what does de-colonization look like, again?
INTERNET, October 2023 — The word “But” has been stunned to find itself appearing in an increasing number of sentences that begin “The killing of children is never acceptable ... ” - Petri https://t.co/IqJbQZt9nD
So basically, what Russia did to Chechnya after the 2nd war there. Security built on a terrible humanitarian price that’s now inevitable anyway. If anything like this happens, Netanyahu and Abbas will be gone before long, well before the handshake photo.
“Whoever wants Gaza will get it. We don’t want to rule 2 million Palestinians.” The tragedy is that this has been true of all sides since 1948. But it’s the 1st time this week I can imagine an endgame: A new, regionally-set PA and redevelopment of rubble https://t.co/mWh2o9g3Vq
In other words, the strategy characterized by Tacitus of making a desert and calling it peace in Gaza, and then turning it over to a new &neutered Palestinian Authority leadership (picked and funded by Arab partners and acceptable to Israel) that ends the 2007 schism.
