🚨#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting after a 22-year-old who runs into BURNING BUILDINGS as a volunteer firefighter was told he isn't qualified to be a paid firefighter...

...because he was HOMESCHOOLED.

Then the city changed the job posting to cover it up.

His name is Andrew Coates. He's 22 years old, in Nebraska.

Right now, today, he runs into burning buildings as a volunteer firefighter for Cedar Bluffs Fire. He is a state-licensed EMT.

He is doing the job. For free.

All he wanted was to get PAID to do it. In his words: "Make a career out of it would be the goal. To get paid to do what you love."

So he applied to the Fremont Fire Department.

And in April, the city rejected him. Why?

Because his high school diploma says he was homeschooled.

That's it. That's the whole disqualification.

Not his EMT license.
Not his fitness.
Not his record.
Not his experience pulling people out of fires ALREADY!!

...how he was educated.

The job posting he applied to said "graduation from high school."

That's all it said.
He graduated high school.
He has a diploma.

And AFTER they rejected him, the city went back and added the word "accredited" to the job description.

His own fire chief, the man who has watched Andrew work, showed up to defend him:

"I feel the city of Fremont is really missing out here, and in my mind, because of his homeschooling, you guys are discriminating against him."

Over THIRTY homeschool families showed up to stand behind this kid.

And the Civil Service Commission? They said it isn't their job to touch city policy.

Homeschoolers are literally a generation of kids who read ABOVE grade level, who work with their HANDS, who volunteer in their communities, who show up for their neighbors.

And this young man is the proof.

At 22, he's a certified EMT and a volunteer firefighter, while plenty of his peers are on a couch.

When your house is on fire at 3 a.m., I promise you will not ask the man dragging your children out where he went to high school.

You will not ask if his diploma was accredited.

You will thank GOD he came.

Andrew isn't even fighting for himself anymore. His words:

"I think now it's turned into we want to make sure that every homeschooler has an equal opportunity."

That's a better man than the policy that rejected him.

Fremont, you have a licensed EMT and an active firefighter begging to serve your city. And you turned him down over paperwork, then rewrote the paperwork to cover it.

Fix this.

Fremont later rewrote the description to "graduation from an accredited high school." HR director Jennifer McDuffee said accreditation was already implied.

"I would say it's a standard understanding that when someone requests a high school diploma or GED that they're asking for an accredited diploma," McDuffee said.

Homeschools in Nebraska operate as Rule 13 exempt schools. Parents file annually and meet hour rules without state accreditation.

"We understood that our homeschool operated legally under Nebraska's Rule 13," his father, Seth Coates, told the Omaha World-Herald. "What we never imagined was that the City of Fremont would treat the absence of accreditation as a basis for disqualifying Andrew from public employment."

JoAnn Coates taught Andrew and his five siblings at home. About 30 homeschool families packed the Civil Service Commission hearing.

Cedar Bluffs Fire Chief Chris Lichtenberg told the board the city is passing on a firefighter he already trusts. "I feel the city of Fremont's really missing out here, and in my mind, because of his home schooling, you guys are discriminating against him."

Commissioner Doug Backens rejected that word. "I don't think there was any discrimination against him, and when they use that word, I don't care to hear that word out there."

Chairman Steve Tellatin noted the original posting's ambiguity. The commission took no action and said city policy is not theirs to rewrite.

Seth Coates said the family now has 30 days to file in court. Andrew said the fight is no longer only about his application.

"We're not mad about one applicant, my application. I think now it's turned into we want to make sure that every homeschooler has an equal opportunity."

Ed’s always had the reputation of being one of the decent ones. The rare guy in the music industry who actually lifts people up, nurtures them and genuinely sees music as a way to inspire and bring people together. His entire vibe is wholesome and earnest, the kind of guy who believes in the power of love and all that (it’s way too kumbaya and saccharine for my tastes).

Which is what makes this whole affair so grim.

Because he should be the last person to receive so much hate and vitriol.

When he says he’s lost friends over this, the thing that jumps out to me is the really bad behavior of his “friends” in the music industry.

You know, the ones he actually invited out on his massive tour. Macklemore and the other opening acts get bigger crowds, bigger paydays and a platform most of them wouldn’t have had on their own.

First, Macklemore used Ed’s stage to make the night all about his own cause. Bro you’re the opening act, nobody is paying for those tickets to see you.

Second, after Robert Kraft and the other stadium owners made it clear the shows weren’t happening with Macklemore on the bill, what did he do? He threw his “friend” under the bus.

The decent move would’ve been for Macklemore to say to the public, “this wasn’t Ed’s fault. Don’t turn him into the villain.”

Instead he’s watched Ed take every arrow on social media and get churned through a full-blown media storm. He lets the climate in which activists hysterically accuse Ed of being complicit in genocide and post absurd cartoons of him personally shooting a Palestinian kid with an RPG fester and bloom.

There were lots of things Macklemore could’ve said to take some of the heat off the man who actually put him on that stage. But he didn’t.

Neither did the other openers who walked. Instead they framed it as principle and solidarity. From the outside it just looks like they took the opportunity, cashed the goodwill, and then left Ed trying to figure out how to keep the tour alive for hundreds of thousands of ticket-holders and the crew who actually depend on the tour to get paid. Ed is the one who took all the risk after all.

This dynamic reminds me of those child actors who built careers off @jk_rowling’s work and then publicly disowned her the second her views became inconvenient. These are not good people and they don’t know gratitude.

Ed’s finding out, the hard way, just how many shitty people were around him.

It’s a terrible experience to go through but in the long run, he would be all the wiser for it

Canadian healthcare used to be good, it is now in desperate fear of collapse. They're bringing in doctors who did not study in Canada and whatever else that entails.

I find the healthcare in the US unquestionably superior. Health insurance is the same since I don't pay income tax in Florida, I pay it on insurance. There is immediate, private healthcare if you need it.
Medically assisted suicide is not an option they offer.
