While playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), Tom Hanks pointed out that Disney “died of lung cancer” after smoking “three packs a day.”

“Can we show him smoking in a major motion picture these days? No way.”

“You go back and you see all these photographs of him, he's pointing like there, and he's pointing like there.”

“He was pointing with two fingers 'cause he had a cigarette in between them... And they airbrushed out the cigarette.”

Hanks pushed to acknowledge Disney's chain-smoking habit and refused to play a completely sanitized version of him, but the studio would not allow any scenes showing active smoking.

“We had a scene in the film, you see me putting it out... nor let anyone see me smoking. It will encourage bad habits.”

To reference the physical toll of the habit, Hanks incorporated Walt Disney's incessant, heavy cough into his performance — a trait real-life Disney employees used to hear echoing down the hallways.
