This morning, around 2:20 AM, a new #Kilauea eruption began within Kaluapele (the summit caldera). It was caught on camera by #HVO's B2cam. Images taken by the webcam were compiled into this timelapse video that shows lava fountains feeding lava flows across the caldera floor.
It's #GeologicMapDay! Geologic maps use colors, lines, and symbols to show the age, composition, and relationships of rocks and sediments. Download and print this fun Utah geologic color-by-number activity!–https://t.co/uFVskt90R5 #utahgeology#earthscienceweek

Photos from #HVO field teams returning from Nāpau Crater. Just a day ago, it seemed as though the rift zone eruption was over. But the opening of a new fissure vent on the hill above #NapauCrater generated lava fountains that sent lava over the rim and onto the crater floor.
#Kilauea volcano's middle East Rift Zone eruption resumed late on Sep 16, 2024, and continues this morning within a remote area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. During the AM overflight, #HVO geologists observed fountaining & active lava flows on the floor of Nāpau Crater.
#Yellowstone Park staff are on scene assessing conditions after a small hydrothermal explosion occurred today (July 23) in #BiscuitBasin. There are no reports of injuries. The boardwalk, on the other hand, will need a few repairs. The area remains temporarily closed. NPS photos.
Shortwave Infrared images from @NOAASatellites#GOESWest showed the thermal signature of a new eruption of the #Kilauwea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi: https://t.co/CcZdc2jTQ2 #HIwx
🌋🚨Update on the new Kīlauean eruption from @USGSVolcanoes: “The eruption is currently ongoing but is taking place in a remote location within the national park, is low in eruptive volume, and does not pose an immediate threat to human life or critical infrastructure.”
:)
Kilauea began erupting about 12:30 AM HST south of the caldera and north of the Koa'e fault system and Hilina Pali Road, within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
