The key phrase here is, “You barely ever see anyone in a bonnet.”

That alone tells me bonnets and durags were never some widespread problem on campus. At most, a few students may wear them occasionally, probably on days when they are tired, rushing, dealing with their hair, or simply do not feel like dressing up. Every human being deserves the freedom to have an off day without being treated like they lack standards or self-respect.

So if students are barely wearing these items in the first place, why was a ban even necessary?

To me, that makes it clear that this policy was not created to address an actual disruption. It was created because certain people in leadership personally view bonnets, durags, and other forms of Black hair care as “ghetto,” embarrassing, or beneath the image they want the school to project.

This policy is essentially telling students that they are never allowed to look tired, be comfortable, protect their hair, or have a lazy day. They must constantly perform someone else’s idea of respectability, even when they are simply going to class or eating in the cafeteria.

And if the behavior was barely happening to begin with, then this was never really about correcting a problem. It was about policing an image.
