Today, @WHOEMRO launched a 3-day workshop in Cairo to strengthen national Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) across the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Bringing together 30 participants from the health, humanitarian, academic and civil society sectors, the workshop aims to support countries in developing national EMT roadmaps aligned with the EMT 2030 Strategy and the regional action plan.
As emergencies in our Region become more frequent and complex, investing in national EMT capacity is essential to ensure countries can rapidly deploy trained teams, maintain essential health services and save lives when crises strike. Particular attention is being given to supporting #Lebanon's efforts to strengthen its national EMT system as part of broader health system resilience efforts.
This workshop provides a valuable platform to strengthen technical expertise, share lessons learned from regional and global experiences, and build the partnerships needed for sustainable and effective EMT systems contributing to the Global Health Emergency Corps vision.
I thank @AECID_es for their generous support as both a key operational partner and for funding this important workshop. I also thank all participating countries and @WHO experts for their commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness and response across our Region.
Looking ahead, @WHO will continue supporting countries to develop and implement national EMT roadmaps, strengthen training and validation systems, expand regional collaboration, and build a sustainable network of national EMTs capable of responding rapidly to health emergencies.

On #Arafah Day, local authorities in Saudi Arabia successfully reached #Hajj1447AH pilgrims across all locations with health and awareness services.
Special attention was given to the prevention of overheating and heat-related illnesses due to high daytime temperatures. Drinking water and protective umbrellas were handed out, while pilgrims were regularly advised to avoid direct sun exposure and to take adequate rest.
Hospitals and health facilities were also fully equipped and prepared to receive and manage all cases related to heat stress and heatstroke.
@WHOEMRO teams are on the ground throughout the #Hajj season to follow up on the various public health measures and to provide support to the Saudi authorities whenever needed.

It was a privilege to contribute to the Joint External Evaluation #JEE of #Libya ๐ฑ๐พ assessing #IHR (2005) core capacities, conducted from 25โ28 April 2026, as mission co-lead and subject matter expert.
This marked an important milestone, eight years after Libyaโs previous JEE.
I was also honored to support the National Action Plan for Health Security #NAPHS mission from 29โ30 April 2026 as co-facilitator.
The NAPHS process helped translate JEE findings and priority recommendations into a practical roadmap for advancing #IHR implementation in #Libya ๐ฑ๐พ
Honored to facilitate & participate as subject-matter expert at the Joint External Evaluation #JEE in #Libya ๐ฑ๐พ followed by the development of the National Action Plan for Health Security #NAPHS, from 25 to 30 April 2026, in #Tripoli.

Incredibly proud of Egypt. After many years of pegging to the Dollar and resisting a free float, this shock has seen the Pound weaken as uncertainty mounts and then rise once it subsides. This isn't easy or painless. But it's the right thing to do. Kudos!

Egypt agreed to buy all the gas that will be produced from the Aphrodite deposit in Cyprus, as the North African country looks to ensure long-term supply and reduce reliance on Israel https://t.co/btSenbZnmX
Early detection. Rapid reporting. Timely response.
Through the 7-1-7 approach, #Tunisia is strengthening collaboration across sectors to better prevent and respond to health emergencies.
