A Black man created ranch dressing — and most people never knew.
Kenneth “Steve” Henson, born in Nebraska in 1918, was a plumber who cooked for his crew in Alaska. One day he mixed buttermilk, mayo, herbs, and spices… and ranch was born.
In 1954, he and his wife bought land near Santa Barbara and named it Hidden Valley Ranch. Guests loved the dressing so much they begged to take jars home. By 1957, stores were selling his dry mix. Orders exploded. Factories followed.
In 1972, Clorox bought the recipe and the name for eight million dollars. Ranch went nationwide. By 1992, it was America’s #1 dressing.
But the man behind it? Nearly erased.
Every salad, every wing, every fry dipped in ranch — that’s his legacy. He mattered. He was the blueprint.

White people are in my comments telling me not to put all white people in the same category, yet Black people have been stereotyped and lumped together for generations. The difference is, when I talk about white people, I'm specifically talking about racist white people.
If that description doesn't apply to you, then it shouldn't offend you. The fact that some of y'all get so triggered whenever racism is called out says more about you than it does about me. Instead of getting defensive, maybe ask yourself why being associated with racism bothers you more than racism itself.
🚨 HATE CRIME? Racist White man with AR-15 and body armor OPENS FIRE on Black family Reunion gathering after shouting slurs
In Leesburg, Lee County, Georgia, on Sunday, a family was having a gathering when Jeffrey Tyler Kinzer leaned out of a car and started hurling racial slurs at them.
Minutes later he returned on foot wearing body armor and carrying an AR-15-style rifle, then opened fire on the group.
The family says it was a clear racially motivated attack.
Kinzer was shot by a 62 year old Marine veteran who stated he wanted to protect roughly 20 children at the gathering.
Sheriff’s Office says it started as a verbal altercation, but witnesses confirm the racial slurs. More charges are expected.
Another white man geared up like he was going to war against a Black family.
Karmelo Anthony has recieved more time (35 years) than George Zimmerman (no time), Daniel Penny (no time), Derek Chauvin (22.5 years), Amber Guyger (10 years) & Rick Chow (no time) COMBINED. This is unacceptable to any sane thinking, no racist person.
I know he was innocent and I suppose that matters but here’s what gets lost in that discourse YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO KILL THE GUILTY EITHER! Stealing is NOT a death penalty crime. We have to resensitize ourselves to DUE PROCESS for Black people too! There’s a process…
Daily reminder that racists hate you because you're Black, not because of "muh behavior." They'll hate you no matter what. Internalize this, and never tapdance.
No.
But that’s also not what we’re discussing.
A hospital refusing to hire qualified physicians based on race and a directory helping patients locate Black physicians are not the same thing.
One is employment discrimination.
The other is patients seeking providers they believe will better understand their experiences.
The fact that you’re conflating those two things is exactly why we will never see eye to eye.
