Spanish police have arrested a 50-year-old Algerian man and his 16-year-old son over three violent robberies targeting women aged 87, 72 and 46 in Alicante.

Police say the father approached the two elderly women holding a phone and apparently asking for help, before attacking them and knocking them to the ground.

Both women were injured and required hospital treatment for hip injuries, with one suffering a fracture.

Police linked the pair to another robbery two hours earlier, when a 46-year-old woman was attacked from behind and had two necklaces ripped from her neck.
