@Elvish_Harper It either invalidates everything, b/c for the price of a Death Star, you could make a billion weapons based on this principle, OR it had such a tiny success chance there was no point attempting it in the first place.
Granted, it’s one of the visually coolest shots in Star Wars.
I respect the non-vitriolic tone of this one, but it shows an ignorance of American sports culture beyond the surface level. There are small towns in big football culture regions that shut the absolute fuck down for high school football games b/c nothing is more important.
As a part-American, allow me explain the difference. I have been to many sporting events all around the USA, and of course, many in the UK and in Europe (because Aston Villa are massive).
For Americans, sport is about entertainment. Big scores, no draws. What happens on the pitch is almost secondary to the performance. Hence pop songs between every play, all kinds of mascot and cheerleader shenanigans, the Armed Forces shenanigans before kick off. This vid was taken at Purdue at half time when they were getting absolutely pumped by Notre Dame. Embarrassing defeat: doesn’t matter, the show must go on.
For Brits, football is something more existential. The seemingly unprompted unison chants, the camaraderie, the explosion upon scoring a goal… nothing in US sports matches it. Not even close. The old grounds and history are part of the charm. I wouldn’t swap battered old Villa Park for any of the US sports arenas I’ve visited.
That doesn’t mean both aren’t a splendid day out, and I love my IU, Colts and Cubs, but the American sports experience does not come close to the British football experience for sheer emotion and spontaneity - EXCEPT in finals, when the jeopardy and tension is on a par.
The USA is subjecting all the players from African and poor Asian countries to sniffer dogs and drug searches when they arrive in the USA and random searches at any time.
All the White teams get a pass.
The USA is such a racist hellhole, even worse than in the 1960s.
@GodOfTweets@saddymayo I swear, y'all read poor and think lower middle class. No, I mean fucking poor. You don't have spare money to stockpile ingredients that eventually snowball into a smorgasbord of meal options. Everything spent goes to what'll immediately feed you, b/c even then it's not enough.
@Marcela252016 Think about the current relatively minimal security situation of notable people who are going to Become A Problem. Then go catch the big screen premieres of the banger movies in the theaters then.
@thamosdeaf Europeans saying the US is an evil, abominable shithole country, and I'm like, "you're not wrong, I'mma let you cook and like your post." Europeans shitting on the silver lining, and I'm like, "well, fuck you too."
@NedSmith940069@saddymayo What the fuck are you even talking about? I'm talking about people trying to eat on $50/wk or less optimizing their limited means, and you're chiming in about a $400/wk eating out budget and investing.
@JDPandolfi@BrewerSooner The thing that happened was the crowd enthusiasm fucking up the offense into a penalty, which is why you see the defense hyping up the crowd after.
@NedSmith940069@saddymayo lmao at you thinking being able to figure out how not to starve by the end of the week means you magically have disposable income to start investing
I think what most Americans arent getting responding to this is that, outside America, people's teams are their lives. They live and breathe everything to do with them. It's common to want your players to die on the pitch to get the victory, it's normal culture, especially in Europe and South America.
With this, it breeds an atmosphere where fans try and make it as uncomfortable and hostile for the other teams. The chants arent nice, youd never find pop songs being sung by fans, let alone by both sets of fans.
Thats why you shouldnt be surprised or offended at the fact a non American would look down and laugh at this sort of atmosphere, let alone the suggestion that it's better than our atmospheres.
For Americans, it's a fun occasion, for most of us, it's life or death
@ughihate_x@saddymayo Did you really just say, "you can't just think about the upfront cost, you have to think about the per meal cost" when half my tweet is about that?
@SullenSerf First, it's "your stadiums are just big and soulless, there's no passion or aesthetic appeal," and then it's "no, your passion and aesthetics don't count, and actually, they just make you a bad person. Ha, I win again."
One of the more depressing political epiphanies was realizing that “pedophiles” usually just means “the most hated outgroups” and “protecting kids” usually just means in the same way you’d protect property (where anything YOU do to it is automatically morally justified)
