Maybe not predisposed but more likely to be impacted. Once you dismantle and understand how concepts of “utang na loob” and “walang hiya” in childhood end up impacting adult behaviors, you can see both sides.
But i get the sentiment. Yes, we are driven by attachment & outcomes.
Filipinos are culturally predisposed to be emotion-driven. This is both our greatest gift and our worst trait. Yes, emotion is a great foundation for creative pursuits and an advantage for professions that require empathy, but the worst basis for electing leaders.
What really gets me is that the root word here is "ibig," which means "love." So no matter whether a relationship is romantic, platonic, or familial, the meaningful, lasting connections we build are always rooted in love. I love the Filipino language so much for this.
Or or…maybe just give the person an option to walk with you on your journey…a good portion of us got life beating us up…and sometimes having someone with you can actually do wonders for you (so long as you don’t develop that codependency)
