Shorter wavelengths, like blue and violet, are scattered more efficiently by the atmosphere, leaving sunlight slightly depleted in blue, which gives it a yellowish appearance. At sunrise or sunset, sunlight passes through more atmosphere, scattering even more blue light, which makes the Sun appear orange or red.

In space, without atmospheric effects, the Sun is observed as white.
