As part of the EU Interreg DTP project "Living Danube Limes", the Danuvina, which will spend some time at the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Slovakia from October 2024, will be honored with a special postmark.
On September 4, the Danuvina was transported from Musov (eastern Czech Republic) back to Krems (Austria). A team from FAU accompanied the crossing. In addition, the Danuvina took on water. We found the leak and were able to seal it well with plugs and tar.
The work on the Celtic wagon continues: the axle support has been completed, and the hubs have also been finished, including the spigot holes for the spokes. The 20 spokes (for two wheels) are adjusted by chamfering the spigots at an angle of approximately 3%.
How can we be sure that the Romans actually sailed close-hauled? Well, there is beautiful research in experimental archaeology conducted by prof. @dreyer_boris , documented in the book "Die Fridericiana Alexandrina Navis (F.A.N.) - Ein Römerboot auf dem Prüfstand - Bau und Test für Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit"
Last Friday we went to the Spessart again to collect more branch forks for our Prahm-boat. The Hochspessart is world-famous for its old oak forests and sustainable forestry. Thank you for 26 new wreaths and your active support!
The winter break is over and we were busy again last week. The catapults were prepared for further tests and the Arcuballista (the ancient pre-version of the medieval crossbow) continued to be built.
