The Supreme Court's decision in Callais has decimated the Voting Rights Act and we have no choice but to act now. Defending the vote means defending the foundation of our democracy.

July 4, 1776, and June 19, 1865, tell two very different stories about freedom in America.

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, announcing that the thirteen American colonies were separating from British rule. The document included powerful words about liberty and equality, but at the same time, hundreds of thousands of African people remained enslaved across the colonies. For enslaved Black people, independence did not mean freedom.

Many enslaved men, women, and children continued working on plantations, farms, and households while the new nation debated the meaning of the very freedom it had declared. Their labor helped build the economic foundation of the United States, yet their own rights were denied.

For generations, enslaved people resisted in many ways. Some escaped, some created secret networks of communication, some preserved African traditions, and others fought through legal challenges, writings, and activism. Free Black communities and abolitionists also pushed the nation to confront the contradiction between its ideals and the reality of slavery.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect on January 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate controlled areas to be free. However, freedom did not immediately reach everyone.

In Texas, one of the most remote Confederate states, many enslaved people remained unaware of their freedom or were prevented from exercising it.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, informing the remaining enslaved people there that they were free.

That day became known as Juneteenth.

The journey from 1776 to 1865 represents nearly 90 years between the promise of independence and the legal end of slavery in the United States. Even after emancipation, Black Americans continued fighting through Reconstruction, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement to secure the freedoms promised generations earlier.

My father's words remain as relevant today as they were when he first spoke them.

We are once again confronted with choices that test our values, our humanity, and our commitment to peace. The questions before us have not changed: Will we answer violence with more violence, or will we choose the difficult but transformative path of nonviolence?

History reminds us that peace requires courage, discipline, and moral conviction. May we have the wisdom to choose it.

Failure is a teacher.

If you have success, you did it right, so there is probably nothing to learn. But if you have failure, there is something to learn.

You have to make the most of your failures. Over time, I developed an instinctual reaction to failure. My instinct now is to view failure as a puzzle that will give me gems if I can solve it.

The puzzle is simply this: What would I do differently in the future so as not to have that result?

When you solve that puzzle, you write the lesson down. That is where principles come from.

Even a Supreme Court stacked by Donald Trump agrees that his attempt to fire Lisa Cook was illegal. Donald Trump and his lackey Bill Pulte have now failed to fire former Chair Jerome Powell and Governor Cook.

This case is a reminder that Pulte cannot be trusted and should be removed immediately as acting Director of National Intelligence and Director of FHFA. Trump’s effort to take over America’s central bank is far from over, and we will keep fighting back.

Whether it’s the Scots bringing their spirit and bagpipes to the games, or the Japanese fans cleaning up the stadium after a match, it’s a beautiful reflection of what the United Nations—and all countries—should be.
It brings out a joy, laughter, and a warmth that gives us a real element of optimism. We should learn from this whole experience of what it's like to be together, and how we can be together.
