Firing (thermocautery) is an old traditional treatment for fistulous withers
Principle: Controlled superficial burns over the affected area to stimulate hyperemia, counter-irritation, and encourage the chronic lesion to drain and heal — same rationale as firing for other chronic bursal/tendon conditions.
Technique (traditional line/point firing):
•Sedate/restrain the horse; local infiltration or regional block over the withers
•Clip and prep the site
•Heated firing iron (or actual cautery pen in modern setups) applied in a pattern — lines or points — over the swelling, penetrating just into the dermis, not deep into the bursa itself
•Pattern usually follows the shape of the swelling, spaced a few mm apart
•Depth is critical: too deep risks damaging deeper structures (supraspinous ligament, bursa wall) or causing excessive scarring; too shallow gives no therapeutic effect
