“Am I an alcoholic?” is a question loaded with fear and stigma. In reality, it's not even a medical term.
In my latest article, I explore the difference between autopilot drinking (ingrained habit) and physically dependent drinking (a disease), as well as the cultural baggage that comes with the word "alcoholic".

@spiritsbusiness “Conclusive” is doing a lot of work here. Much of Gen Z still isn’t old enough to drink, while Boomers are cutting back from the heaviest baseline. One group is still entering the market; the other is drinking like it’s 1999, albeit at a slowing pace.
@cruxpsychology True, moderate drinking is not a health hack, but according to the same study, moderation does not increase your mortality risk either.
@Fact Wishful thinking! A hangover is a combination of dehydration, poor sleep, alcohol breakdown, gut irritation and inflammation. Water helps with one of them, and is certainly sensible because it can also help you pace your drinking. But it can’t prevent a hangover on its own.
@TheGrocer People are genuinely wanting to drink less these days, given the amount of enquiries I get.
Autopilot drinking needs more than willpower and abstinence streaks to bring it back under control.
@MattWalshBlog The irony is, the more that sobriety enthusiasts demonise anybody who hasn't failed at their relationship with alcohol as they have, the more people who might want to cut back end up doubling down on their resistance to doing anything about it. Scientific proven fact. #drinkless
Eligo ergo sum. Restoring conscious choice is integral to successful alcohol moderation. Own your decisions. I choose, therefore I am.

@scottmelker Some common sense on the alcohol debate, thank you!
It's rare for a quick coffee with an old friend to turn into 6 hours of unforgettable fun like it can over a drink. Live your life!
@InstAlcStud Or are they just covering all bases? Making sure Gen Z find an easy entry point to alcohol before they can be milked later when they have more disposable income?
1990's Alcopops are being reinvented for a more sophisticated new generation!
A phrase I coined for my moderation clients seeking strategies for the FIFA World Cup.
Even if you don't adopt it all evening, you'll still have better sleep, fewer calories, and sharper mornings, whilst blending in with everyone else watching the game. #FIFAWorldCup#Guinness
@Thin_Smiley Alcohol moderation isn't difficult as long as you use a strategy adapted for your triggers rather than relying on willpower alone. Follow https://t.co/TuAuAW4eK0 for real-world advice.
@bootzz I think you'll find your assumptions about alcohol being used as a coping mechanism are not coherent with the actual scientific data - the real figure is 13.6%.

@Pharm_dannymelo Cutting back has a culmative effect, not only does less alcohol lower your BP in itself, but you tend to sleep better too, which helps even more.
@AT80624663 Working in tune with your body is a smart move when moderating. That "headache data" will help inform your future decisions about whether to have that extra glass next time.
