South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham died at age 71 due to an aortic dissection, according to preliminary findings by the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia, his spokesperson said.
CBS News’ @DrLaPook explains what that means, what symptoms to look out for and the underlying risk factors.
Noah Wyle has been waiting since “ER” for an experience that was as creatively and energetically satisfying as “The Pitt,” which leads the Emmy nominations with 25, including for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, for Wyle.
Sunday, we’re revisiting Dr. Jon LaPook’s conversation from last year with Wyle, while season 2 of “The Pitt” was in production.
In 1982, Robin Williams did a routine as the American Flag for the Norman Lear produced tv special "I Love Liberty" created to bridge political divides - and it's one of the greatest pieces you'll see 🇺🇸
“Why do it unless you want to be the best?”
Sandra Brunson, Knicks star Jalen Brunson’s mom, remembers fondly the advice Kobe Bryant gave her son years ago, when Jalen was dreaming of going pro.
Aspen Ideas Health exceeded my expectations. The setting was great, of course, but it was the conversations with so many interesting people that made it.
Thank you to @ariannahuff and Wendy Bartie for gathering an extraordinarily interesting group of people for dinner. (Many new collaborations stemming from it already. Arianna is THE connector of connectors. Thank you, Arianna, and Libby Duke.)
I got to sit down with Suzanne McCormick, CEO of YMCA of the USA, and we talked about healthy buildings at the Y. (My family and I are long-time Y members, and I loved she knew every detail about “my” Ys I've belonged to over the years, and that she was so interested in healthy indoor air.)
@ashishkjha was excellent, as always, and gave a fair and informed warning of the very real risk of a serious biosecurity threat…within the next 5 years. (his company, @BioRadarUSA, is focused on early threat detection.)
Congrats to @ZekeEmanuel on his book, Eat Your Ice Cream: 6 Simple Rules for a Long and Healthy Life. (great title)
This session on menopause and perimenopause with Mary Claire Haver, MD, Sharon Malone, and Kate Snow was loaded with information and science. An hour worth your time: https://t.co/1sJ3uP1sc6
I finally got to meet Karen DeSalvo, former Chief Medical Officer at Google (and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health alum), who continues to be up to interesting and important things.
Got lucky randomly sitting next to Lizet Ocampo at dinner and learned about her role as Executive Director of Vot-ER, a national, nonpartisan nonprofit organization that partners with doctors, nurses, and medical students to help patients and staff register to vote.
Found time to record a podcast with Jason Arora, MD, MPH, MA (check out “The Health Curve” podcast).
And a fortuitous last minute connection with super savvy Ali Furman at PwC on the way to the airport.
So many more (the danger of starting to list names…): @jeremyfaust led an interactive session on music and health and healing, always good to see my 60 Minutes friend @DrLaPook, had a “ten minute power walk power talk” with Dan Buettner Jr. (amazing what you can accomplish in 10 minutes, if you’re moving and motivated), many chats with @megtirrell at CNN, and somehow I missed @VinGuptaMD (?!) and 10-20 more people I was trying to connect with.
And I’m most grateful @aspenideas included healthy buildings, which is often (always?) an afterthought at health events, and had my book in the bookstore (it sold out!). Thanks to @DrBlytheAdamson (smart health economist) for stepping in for @celinegounder to moderate our panel, and so good to join @Rachel_Hodgdon and Diana Araoz-Fraser on-stage and learn from them.
(oh yeah: a giant black bear walked right by me in town. My least favorite chance encounter of the week.)
“The Second Round Foundation was born out of Jalen's journey”: Sandra Brunson, who co-founded the non-profit with her son, Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson, in 2022, told @DrLaPook focusing on youth mental health, access to sports and other critical resources can help empower young people.
Brunson told Dr. LaPook on her parenting philosophy, what she learned from her own time as an athlete and her foundation’s mission: “We move slowly, small steps because they're very methodical.”
Viva Olsen, an indigenous Greenlander, is sharing her experiences as a "human book" at Copenhagen's @TheHumanLibrary, where visitors can ask volunteers candid questions about their lives.
Olsen told @DrLaPook that before President Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, most Greenlanders paid little attention to him and instead remembered American soldiers as friendly figures who brought Christmas gifts to local children. https://t.co/Ipu97ROZ7V
Christian Sarner is helping break down misconceptions about schizophrenia by serving as a “human book” at Copenhagen’s @TheHumanLibrary, where visitors can ask volunteers candid questions about their lived experiences.
Diagnosed with schizophrenia more than a decade ago, Sarner told @DrLaPook that he became convinced that the world around him was fake and questioned whether he was even human.
The Artist Will See You Now: artist Mary Lacy mimics the schedule of a physician—only drawing portraits instead of seeing patients. Each ‘appointment’ is fifteen minutes, one after another, all day everyday. We sat for her @aspenideas@DrLaPook@nyulangone#art#empathy
Jalen Brunson's mom still keeps up a tradition that started back when the NBA star was in high school: She texts him before every game. https://t.co/G4izUbW70W
Since high school, NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson’s mom, Sandra, has texted him words of encouragement before every game: “I still send them. And he looks forward to them.”
In Sandra Brunson’s first broadcast TV interview since her son helped lead the Knicks to an NBA Championship, she tells Dr. Jon LaPook about The Second Round Foundation, the nonprofit she created with Jalen Brunson. Watch more of their conversation Friday on CBS Mornings.
“It’s not what happens, it's how you respond”: Sandra Brunson, the mother of New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson, helped shape the NBA champion as a leader.
In a broadcast exclusive interview, Sandra Brunson tells @DrLaPook about @secondroundfdn, the nonprofit she created with Jalen Brunson. Watch more of their conversation Friday on CBS Mornings.
Why we come to Aspen Ideas: Health each year? The panels and people are inspiring, we get to spread the word about our work on empathy and medicine and…it’s fun! @AspenideasAspen @DrLaPook @nyulangone #empathy#AspenIdeas
My father was an FDNY battalion chief. Courage, compassion, commitment, composure were the lessons he taught me. I shared that at a meeting & became emotional. A leader told me he would be proud of me. That changed everything @nyulangone#empathy#StoriesOfEmpathyInTheWorkplace
In 1970, about 1-in-20 children were affected by obesity — today, it's 1-in-5.
Multiple factors have contributed to that increase, @drlapook reports. He looks at programs aimed at helping kids get healthy by eating right and exercising, while helping decrease the risk of problems tied to obesity later in life.
“Childhood obesity is one of the most daunting challenges that young people face from a health and wellness perspective.”
