Between 2017 and 2024, as many as 19,135.6 acres of illegal poppy cultivation were destroyed across 12 districts in the state, with Kangpokpi district seeing the highest destruction at 4,454.4 acres, as per a report by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC).

These destructions were successfully carried out under the direction of Shri N Biren Singh during his government.

Today, widespread flooding has devastated Kangpokpi district, submerging homes, streets, and alleyways as a result of the poppy plantations.

Poppy plantations, thriving on cleared forestland, disrupt water retention, exacerbating floods that flows down into the valley, impacting countless lives.

The impact of deforestation and poppy cultivation ripples outward, bringing suffering to all of Manipur.

The reckless clearing of forests for illicit crops, alongside charcoal production, has left the ecosystem vulnerable, intensifying flooding state-wide.

Urgent action is needed to halt this environmental catastrophe and restore balance to our state’s natural resources before more communities pay the price.

#Manipur Police & CRPF, conducted poppy destruction drive in Lhungjang Village yesterday. What's so special?

Lhungjang is native village of Ch. Ajang Khongsai, President of Kuki Inpi, Manipur, under whose watch large-scale poppy plantation was SHELTERED.

OBVIOUSLY, drive was met with violent opposition. A large mob armed with sticks gathered at the site, forcibly halting the operation. Taking advantage of the limited number of police personnel, the mob vandalized three police vehicles and threatened the personnel to stop the destruction drive. The situation quickly escalated, and reinforcement team led by SP Kangpokpi rushed to spot to control the mob.
